New Transfer Case Cost ?

No not yet. Spoke with auto shop few days ago and they said waiting for the parts to come in. I asked them to purchase new parts and not try to source used parts.
Hopefully in next week or so my truck will be ready for pick up.

 

Www.car-parts.com for a used one. A bunch of dudes here have gone to a J case manual and probably their old motor actuated case it’s sitting somewhere collecting dust. Btw

Lost me drive shaft yes what does this have to do with transfer case unless the driveshaft beat it up. Pictures?

 

Yes, when drive shift broke lose it banged against actuator, exhaust line and according to dealership it also damaged transfer case. However shop where I took truck said it looked like transfer case suffered no damage. So, they are replacing drive shift and actuator and damaged piece of exhaust line.

I did not think to take pics of damage when incident occurred.

 

I'm curious, was the u-joint that let go a greasable one or non-greasable?

And the front was the one that let go? Odd that would happen in 2WD where the front shouldn't really be spinning. Also confused on how the actuator got damaged from the front driveshaft being the one that came apart.

 

Maybe I mis-spoke when I said front driveshaft. Main Driveshaft is two piece unit. Front part of driveshaft broke loose from u-joints and banged against transfer case actuator.

 

Gotcha. I was wondering if you meant the front half of the rear.

 

Because the front unlike the older ones it has no disconnect (hub lock out) the front drive shift spins all the time you are moving yes it's dumb it's for lazy people.

 

There is still a disconnect (the ADD) and the front driveshaft should not be moving. Only reason front driveshaft might spin a tiny bit in 2WD would be resistance in the sprocket of the transfer case causing it to spin a bit off of the tcase main shaft.

 

Nope the wheels drive it like it or not. Nothing happening in the transfer case. Try it, truck the ground try turning it.

 

I don’t think you understand how the ADD works or Toyota’s reasons for implementing it. The front left CV drives the spider gears in the diff which rotates the center shaft backwards.

The front driveshaft from the diff to transfer case does not spin, or if it does it’s a tiny amount due to drag in the transfer case.

The whole reason Toyota uses the ADD is to stop the front driveshaft and front diff (ring and pinion) from spinning full time.

Locking hubs would accomplish the same thing but they’d stop the CVs from spinning as well.

you can 100% turn the front driveshaft by hand with the truck on the ground in 2WD while sitting still unless there is a malfunction in the ADD or transfer case.

 

The engagement is in the transfer case.

 

The engagement is in both the transfer case and the front diff. The transfer case shifts first to get the driveshaft spinning and the diff moving in the correct direction, and then the ADD shifts to send the power to both front wheels. Look up the ADD (automatic differential disconnect) motor. Toyota has been using them a very long time in vacuum and electric form.

The ADD has been discussed countless times on TW. With the ADD the driveshaft does not spin all the time and neither do the front r&p gears. However, the spider gears and the center shaft do spin all the time in opposite directions until 4WD is engaged.
