Oversized Tire Odometer Fix

Does anyone know if there is a programmer out there for 2004 tacoma's that will recalibrate or at least give a reading for how many miles my truck actually gets between fill ups?

 

i have 275's upgraded from 265's

 

what size 275's? are they 32's?

 

275-70-16 so yeah close to 32's

i assume you started with a 265/70/17 and you went up to 275/70/17?

so the 275 tire is 1.7% larger.
so to figure out your actual milegae, take your odometer reading and multiply it by 1.017.

 

^true, but most speedos actually read a bit fast on stock tires, so upgrading to 32's should put it dead on. You can easily test this by hitting the freeway at 60mph and timing yourself between mile markers. It should take exactly a minute to do a mile. With my 265/75/16's (32's) my speedo is perfect.

 

Your speed is probably more correct now. Use your phone gps or something else to verify. Stock, its reads a little fast. This is true of my 04 Taco and my previous 2000 4runner.

 

I have a Superlift Truspeed recalibrator.
It is adjustable so you can make your speedo & mileage spot on.
It cost me about $150 but I figured it was cheaper than a speeding ticket!

 

So a scangauge can recalibrate the speedometer, or are you saying to use it to read the actual speed? I want to upgrade at some point and this will be good to know.

it will NOT recalibrate the speedo. what it will do (when configured properly) is display the adjusted mph and distance (plus a bunch of other cool stuff).

 

A scangauge can be dialed in for the percentage of error your larger tires introduce. The ScanGuage can then be set to display RPMs and MPH. And for fillups, calculate your MPG average and fuel remaining in the tank.

As others have said, your speedo was likely off by as much as 5%. By going from 31's to 32's your likely showing much closer to accurate now.

 

I just drove past one of those speed detectors that the police put up that show your speed as you pass on my way home from work. Was doing exactly 50 mph on the speedometer and it read 48 on the sign.
