on another note. Anyone serious about joining last week of March? Looking at southern Ut and maybe AZ? Nothing definitive yet. Was thinking about some Capitol Reef Area and Escalante maybe. Maybe further south.

cool, so whats the limits of the iron pig? I don't intend on doing anything hard core wheeling wise. But still worth knowing.

or would the green machine be coming?

The truck is retired at this point. Maypops, an inch lower than stock, it's not cut out for dirt these days. Foley can't fit over elephant hill as a benchmark. It's more White Rim than Hells revenge. Big break over angle and shallow departure angle is obvious. It's probably about as capable as a stock third gen in terms of the trails it can handle. I big part of it is I'm still learning it too as it's much different with the size, the solid axle up front and the weight.

Cool. Elephant hill isn't on the agenda. Beef Basin could be. Although will all depend on snow fall.

And I imagine speed is much slower over all.

Speed is way down, call me the tail gunner for life at this point. It's a lot of weight and there are compromised with the Quigley setup that just aren't going to allow for any speed. Inside I have a lot of noises, rattles and such, I can hear the roof/body flex, I can here the water tank slosh around and things in the fridge move about, so that in itself keeps speeds down so the thing doesn't rip itself apart. It's a very complicated vehicle and I don't want to cause unnecessary wear and tear on the internal components.

The bit of beef basin I've done in the truck I wouldn't sweat. I know there's a moderate hill climb over there that could be spicy but I have the clearance and gearing for it so wouldn't shy away from it. I think Dollhouse would be a very technical and challenging one for how it's setup. I think it could be done but with some frazzled nerves and it would take a long time. That should give you an idea of where it falls on capability.

Cool. Good to know. I don't think we will do the Doll house. Although that would be a cool spot but I don't want to bring devin there yet as the hike to the river is a bit much right now for her knee.

So between your rig and not wanting Devin to do any difficult terrain hike wise. Plus dogs(I assume you'll bring venice) that outlines our limitations. I might look more into Valley of the Gods area. I really want to see the Moon Room just north of there too.

I wasn't saying let's go to the dollhouse, more thinking about the trail and the vans capabilities (and mine). No matter what I'm pretty open to trying whatever is in store and if it's too much I'm not afraid to turn back and regroup.

I'll have Venice with me for sure. Need to get a new handheld ham. The cb in the van needs love as it has some interference issues.

I wasn't really thinking the Maze area anyways I think at this point. But then again I have no plan

    * Moon House - which is very cool. Hike isn't long, but also has some up/down scrambling, just fyi for Devin.

Also, just a reminder that Moon House requires both a hiking pass (to hike in the area) a permit (to go to Moon House) and there are only 20 Moon House permits issued per day, and they have to be picked up/validated in person, even if you buy them online.

    * BLM Utah Cedar Mesa Permits and Passes Information.
    * Moon House Day Hiking Permits, Bears Ears National Monument - Recreation.gov

My availability will depend on the dates. I've already got a commitment on 4/23 in the Eastern Mojave that I've been working on for a year or so, so I can't miss that. Ideally for me, you guys would go March 19/20-24, but I think you're talking about the following week?

Monte - can you start a seperate planning thread for it, so it's easier to find info, rather than scrolling back through this one? (which I just had to do to try and find dates that I think haven't been mentioned)

Plus, that'll give Mike a template to use for planning that group outing he was going to open up to others :D

I'll buy one, need it anyways. Also looking into an InReach this year as well.

Valley of the gods is cool, be happy to be in that area again.

Really need some better glass to better capture that area, think I'm going to opt for an L-series 100-400 soon which won't be ideal lol

Yeah sure I'll start one today.

Doing the last week of March 23-29 or 30th.

I remember that about the Moon Room thanks for the reminder. Forgot you had to pick them up in person.

Mike Devin and I drove through it on our big UT epic trip back in 2018 I think. But I'm sure there are some hikes in there or things to find.

It can be crowded, not a ton of camping areas. There's some stuff up on the mesa up Moki Dugout that could be worth exploring too. Even just hiking up the washes would be a good time there, it's gorgeous there. Idk if you're wanting to hit monument valley too, since it's just down the road, but I certainly won't be paying for that again  my preference would be to schedule it so not to cover too many miles each day, be able to hang out and bullshit in the later afternoon enjoying where we are rather than trying to maximize miles per day so to speak.

    LOL.

I wouldn't mind that, as long as I was expecting it.

Also, I think more than Valley of Gods, you might enjoy hanging just west, below Cedar Point. Still great views, near Goosnecks State Park, and there are a few petroglyphs to search for, if anyone feels so inclined. Totally chill roads, and no people to contend with, either.

Three Days of R&R (Apr 2023) -- see the first day of that trip. Really, all those days are in the area, but the hiking on the following days is probably a bit much for Devin.

(sorry for the weird reply/delete/reply; wanted to add the bit about Cedar Point and catch Ben's totally understandable selfishness)

I'm not familiar with that Cedar Point, the one I went to last year overlooked the river crossing in the Dirty Devil. Wouldn't do that solo again though  there are some big, soft dunes to get through and there was one that the van barely had the power to get over the worst one. Amazing views though.
