I know this is a 2.7 thread, but I could not find a thread for the 2.4 engines. I have a 5 lug manual trans, and I am planning to lift it. Some people don't like it when we lift 5 lugs, but this is my first car and I don't really have a choice. Anyway, I want to get some AT tires afterward. The tires I want are 245/75/16 (around 30 inches in diameter total) but I would like to know how much they will harm my truck's power output before I buy them. I would still like to use 5th gear and drive the interstate. It will be a daily driver; I will have to drive it to school. There seem to be knowledgeable people on here so I thought I would go ahead and ask.
Also, I'm running 16 x 7 rims. Thank you for your time.

Check out the tire size calculator. It lets you compare different sizes and axle ratios.

@hella_tacoma someone here might also be able to answer your question about re-gearing, I think I saw someone asking about 265s a few pages back.

Check out this website. If you plug your numbers in, you can compare how new tires/gears will affect your RPMs at a given speed

This is more for tire size comparisons. The link I posted is helpful if you have regeared or are planning to and you’re curious about how many rpms you’ll be turning at a given speed with larger tires as well

    Hey,

I have a 3rd gen AUTO with the 2.7L, just came across this thread. I'm upgrading my stock steelies to Method 703's which are a few lbs lighter per wheel, but am planning to add 265/70/17 Toyo AT3's which are E rated (I wanted them). They are 49lbs a tire. This thread gave me some hope that my truck will still be usable. I get them mounted in a couple days and after reading online for the last week or so, people made me think my truck wouldn't even move if I put E rated tires on them. I eventually do plan to do some 5100's up front and a Icon AAL in the rear, and that should be the extent of my suspension/wheel modifications.

Anyone else with the 2.7L AUTO have any problems with bigger tires for highway cruising? I know the stock 245/75's sucked and I had to really put the foot down to give it juice on inclines, I suspect that'll be even worse with the bigger tires. I wouldn't mind a soft topper at some point too, but I still should be under payload.

I expect you’ll want to regear if you’re going up much in tire size with the 2.7L. It’s a great motor but not particularly powerful and needs rpms to get the job done when pushed.
This tire size tool can help you determine how much things can change. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

I have a 16 2.7 auto and it’s completely gutless on the highway with 265x70x17 duratracs. Hunts really bad between 4-5 gear.

I’m trying to get more options on 5:29s and a tune or sell the truck.

I've got an almost identicle truck (with a softopper), but I have some lighter wheels and P-rated tires in 265/70r17. I want 33's though, my truck has a 2" lift and these tires just don't fill out the wheel well. I have a 9-drive set to 1.9, for a smoother take off, and I always use the ect button. It drives fine, but there's a lot to be desired on hills. I live in the mountains, so my drive to work every day is 2k foot climb. To be honest, the truck works just fine they way it is, but I don't think going up to 33's without a regear would be a good idea. I do floor my truck everywhere haha
