Needed advice

hi I’m about to purchase myself a RV and I was going to post the dry weight and hitch weight and all that stuff but just wanted to know what your all advice would be prior to making this $20,000 purchase from this RV company. I just don’t want to tear my truck up because I have never owned a RV in my entire life. I don’t think I’ve even stayed in one, but I’m about to make this decision I was approved but I was wanting to know your advice. I’m about to post what model it is and if my truck can handle it

The dry weight (which is misleading to begin with) is over the max capacity of a Tacoma.

 

No. All you need to do is read the specs on your door sticker. The max payload if your truck is likely around 1200 pounds. With 900 lbs on the hitch, you are left with 300 for yourself, passengers, and gear.

Additionally, the total weight of the trailer once full will almost certainly exceed the 6400 lb max tow weight.

You might also be doing a wheelie down the road unless you have a weight distributing hitch.

On the bright side you might be able to finance the trailer with a good YouTube video.

add to over payload, the wind resistance will most likely drag you down much much further.
This is half ton minimum territory.

 

It appears you need a bigger truck or a smaller RV. The right RV salesman would take your truck into consideration and point you in the right direction for the appropriate RV.

 

Never trust a sales guy they are just there to upsell and get that commission. Who cares if your frame bends or you end uo in the ditch 20 minutes later

Also, is the RV for fun or to full-time live in? Those are two completely different scenarios.

If it's for fun, go small. Smaller is funner. Don't listen to the sales guys or the eyes-bigger-than-stomach syndrome. They are not your friends. As small as possible is more fun. Especially for someone who is about to enter a world of "do we really need to change the water anode every year (yes)" and "It says 100 miles to the next gas station, can I make it? (No)" and "Shit, we got here after dark, how do I back it between the trees without hitting anything? (That's the neat part, you can't)"

When I was young we had a Serro Scotty Sportsman 13.
It was 10 feet of body and 3 feet of tongue, 975 pounds.

Amenities were basic: a 2 burner stove, propane light, 6 gallon water tank with a hand pump and an icebox -- you put block ice in it every 2 days or so.

Add in a deck of cards, Yahtzee game and a transistor radio and we never wanted for anything.

It’s more about getting out there, and having a place to sleep, rather than dragging an apartment to some overcrowded campground full of dipshits.
The smaller, the less stressful, less maintenance, setup, breakdown etc, so you can spend more time vacationing, than jackin with momma’s shaggin-wagon.

 

You're making a huge purchase and you've never stayed in one? Start off with a teardrop trailer and try things out. Your Tacoma can handle that.

 

That is a hard no man. Maybe half that for max.

 

Sometimes at the end of a road trip, instead of our usual remote boondocking, we'll grab a single night in a park with hookups. This is usually done as a convenient layover on the way home, plus it's nice to top off the batteries and do a clean-out before it gets stored back in the garage.

I mention that because on the last night of our last trip, our tiny popup was parked next to a class A pusher. Even though it's a pack up and clean night, we still sat in our camp chairs, watched the sunset, and had a decent evening. Or we tried to. The guy in the motorhome just watched old black and white TV all night, loudly. Loud enough that I could hear exactly who the Lone Ranger was pursuing in each episode.

I truly never understood that. If I want to couch potato and watch TV, cool, I'll sit my butt on my couch at home. But vacation time includes vacation from screens for me. I'm there to enjoy what I find in the real world.

That's what I meant by going small. Part of enjoying the outside is being able to access the spots that don't have 12 foot wide pull-throughs. A big trailer can't get you there. And there's nothing to see where they park, so I guess I can't blame them too much if they think that all there is to do is to watch TV. I doubt those guys even know where the little trailers go.

 

I have seen signs prohibiting trailers of too much length on certain roads. Artists Palette Rd in Death Valley/Badwater-Rd area is one. Too curvy, barely 2-lanes wide.

 

As stated... Way too much trailer for a Tacoma. I'd be looking at 4K dry as a max weight if I were you. Also, check your manual but if I recall the max tongue weight for our trucks is 670ish so hell no on that big one!
