turning my 06 2x4 into a 4x4

My Name is Michael My email is mik6567@aol.com and I i just purchased a 06 prerunner and it had 13 k miles on it. I also have a 100,000 bumper to bumper warranty on it. I bought it from a deal and contacted the original owner. its an auto v6 i want to make it a 4x4 truck any ideas on if I should do it or not ? A new 2011 truck hard loaded 4x4 is like 35k I bought this for 19k I only need it to be a 4x4 should I get the dealer to do the conversion? or should i get a 4 wheel parts store to do it ? I already put a 3500 worth of aftermarket cool parts on it. it is perfect other then being 2 wheel drive. let me know your thoughts please

 

You'd need a front drive shaft and a Transfer Case along with some other stuff...A manual t-case would be cool...like an FJ Cruiser

Why would you buy a prerunner if you knew you wanted a 4x4????!!??

 

plan on spending around 10k to make it 4wd. and its called a sas conversion. do a search "SAS" titles only. should get quite a few hits, hopefully helping you get info

Never go to 4wheel parts for labor. I have looked into the same before I found my 4x4. Get a 4x4 donor truck and switch the needed parts.
It WILL void your warranty.

You don't have to go SAS. Just swap parts. Its been done a handfull of time before.

He doesn't have to do a full on SAS and from reading his post I don't think it would be advisable. He just wants to do a 4wd conversion.

 

ohhhh i gotcha. then i guess going to a scrap yard and getting parts would be the best way to go. or buying all the parts new if you are anal about it.

X2 I can do a better job than 4wheelparts can. I think if you get the dealership to do it your waranty does not void. Look into how much labor would be.

Huh? You couldn't wait to find a used 4wd? You act as if they only started making 4wd trucks in 2011 and buying new was the only option for 4wd. You also wouldn't have had to spend $35k to get 4wd. A double cab with the top TRD OR package would sticker at $32k and there's no reason you wouldn't be able to get the dealer down under $30k. I was out the door for $28k on my 4x4 TRD Sport with out really trying to haggle them down much. Depending on what packages you were looking at you could have gotten a brand new one for the mid $20k range.

As mentioned, you're going to spend a lot between parts and labor to make it 4wd so you're really not going to be saving $16k. Good luck.

Once in a blue moon, someone will come along who has the ability and fortitude to do this job. Such a person doesn't buy a truck because of the warranty on it, however, because he doesn't need one. He knows he has the ability to strip the truck to the frame and put it back together. With his teeth.

You need two things:
1. Mad mechanix skillz.

2. Ready access to a same vintage 4x4 donor truck from which you can pull all the parts you need (front and rear driveshaft, transfer case, front differential, front CV axles, and about a thousand smaller parts)

Buying any of the required parts new from the dealer (e.g. front diff, transfer case, etc...) will put you underwater on value, before you add a minute of labor. Putting in any shop-rate labor will also put you underwater.

Nope, 4x4 conversion is a pure labor of love, done by hardcore, resourceful cheapskates.

Like the yeti in the wild, only rumors of such individuals exist. They don't actually show up for real on TW, posting photo-documentaries of their exploits. And, as I'm sure you know, the watchword of the BBS is: "pics, or it never happened!"

You can do it all for like $1500-$2000. Its just a T-case new front and rear drive shafts, front diff and front axles. There are a few other odds and ends but thats pretty much it.

 

add spindles and the electronics to go with it.

 

After I get moved out to Tally and have my suspension mods done, I'm going to begin slowly researching and acquiring the parts for a 4x4 conversion.

I've considered selling my truck for a 4x4. It would be definitely be easier, but my truck is perfect for me minus the lack of 4x4, and I have it fully paid off.

My ultimate goal is to have my truck 4x4 with a manual t case (fj cruiser). That's honestly what I wanted all along.
