Well, no better way to know what you want than personal experience at your own expense...
Bought a set of Toyo AT3s a couple months ago in 265/75r16s (SL) as I had previously good experience with them on my jeep both on and off road. Got them through Discount tire and couldnt have been happier.
pros: wet weather grip, off road traction, and road comfort (smoother ride was noticeable for me)
negatives: Road noise was a little louder and MPG dropped by about 2 overall (more than I thought it would but within my justification range)
I did get an OTT tune about a year ago and regeared to 4.88s earlier this year, as I tow a SXS regularly and hated the gear hunting (the tune didnt solve the problem enough for me but the gears definitely did).
I recently hit some trails at uwharrie (been there a bunch with my SXS and previous jeeps), so I wanted to see what the yota could do. While the tires did everything I asked of them, the sharp rocks had me cringing on multiple occasions. No punctures or damage recieved, but I spent too much time worrying about the right lines to avoid damage (toyo at3s dont have much sidewall protection, especially in the SL category).
So, I found a cheap set of 4runner wheels and decided to try out 255/80r17s (since 255s in 16 inch wheels dont have much selection variety). Went with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers based on wanting a little more off road traction and strength but also decent rain handling and road manners.
Got them installed at wallyworld and....well, Ill probably take them to discount tire or someplace in the near future for an expert opinion on the balancing (stacked weights werent flush and almost form an X, and they gauged my wheels really badly on the inside....anyways, got them mounted and took el truck out for a drive. In the first 20 miles of driving, somehow they are quieter and smoother than my Toyos, which is saying a lot! They do feel a little "wallowier", but I was expecting that with the taller profile...but not bad though. Still too early to give accurate MPGs and havent recalibrated, but the instant-MPG-o-meter is showing about the same as the toyos...will update in the future with more miles and nerdy science calculations.
All in all, the extra weight doesnt make much of a fifference while driving. Taking off from a start feels better than before, as first gear doesnt feel quite as short (again- Im OTT tuned and have 4.88 gears). For a daily driver and regularly towing about 3000lbs, this setup feels pretty good to me.
First two pics are the Toyo AT3s in 265/75r16
Las two pics are Nitto Ridge Grapplers in 255/80r17

My family have had these on a number of our gas and diesel Sierra’s. My father took his older one off roading up in the Sierra’s and I’m still shocked to this day we didn’t have to hike out from a torn sidewalk. They held up really well and performed well (never tried mud but mountain trails and sandy beaches were good) and are a great road tires. My only complaint is the aesthetic I think is different for their size (wanna say it was a 33”) vs one that can fit a stock Taco like a 31” ish. Maybe also was a different sidewall strength but going to need to do your own HW.
Anyways besides not being as aggressive LOOKING as I would want, these are actually my favorite tires.

Bought a set of the Eldorado Trail Guide AT tires for my 2008 TRD Sport and am pretty happy with them overall so far. These tires are made at a Cooper factory so they are US made. Tires are quiet, smooth, and look really good on the truck. Only complaint I would have is they seem to want to break loose if you give the truck too much gas around corners. $775 installed at Flynn’s Tire.

I love the 4Runner OR wheels - are you stock suspension? Any rubbing on either of your two setups?

The Kenda Klever R/Ts are really amazing in all conditions. I have tested them in snow, loose dirt, rocks, wet conditions and they perform extremely well and are super durable. They also don't have road noise like a typical MT would have. I run the 35x10.5s and am never looking back! Although I wish they were still as cheap as they were a year ago.

275/70R17 Toyo R/T Trail / Method 305 Double Black 17x 8.5 4.75 bs/0 offset. Minor plastic trimming/clears cab mount by a 1/2". Road noise on hwy not bad at all, no noticable power loss. Handles great offroad and in the snow so far. Tires are e rated... you feel the road but truck tracks like a tank with no sway while cornering. After running BFG A/T's the last 30 years it was time for a change.

So far they've been great. Only thing i've noticed between the new tire/wheel size the turning radius in 4WD is shorter in snow covered parking lots... bind feel sooner than the stock wheels with 265/75/16 A/T's i had on before. Just need to remember to get back into 2WD or make gradual moves. Tires have handled snow in 4WD good... 2WD not great but i knew that going in as they're not winter rated. My skiing days are over so i'm not that interested in winter tires anymore.

I've been running Yokohama Geolandar G015 on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma for the last 4 years, I've gotten about 50K miles out of them. Wondering if I should make a switch and considering Falken Wildpeak AT4W- cost is just a little more but tread life is rated at 10K more. I've seen negative reviews regarding performance, noise, balance issues later in tire life- after 30K miles. Does anyone have any feedback with the AT4W after some wear? I need a unicorn- great on the highway, relatively quiet, long tread life, can get me out of a 3 foot snowbank and won't break the bank. The Geolandars have been awesome but just wondering if there is something better out there...

Also trying to compare the Falken Wildpeak A/TW4 255/85R16 and BFG KO3 285/75R16. I just went over 110k on the KO2s, so I love the mileage, but I'm leaning toward the skinnys. Help me out..... Also, Toyota has buy 3 get 1 for $1 until Jan 31 so I need to make a decision quick.

Alright thoughts and opinions here. Through my tire vendor I can get a set of 255/85R16 Falken Wildpeak MTs for $1,007 or a set of Milestar Patagonias MTs in a 315/75R16 for $928. Are 35s worth it? I currently have Mickey Thompsons Baja Legend in 285/75R16. I have been happy with them but I also want to try something different.
