Pretty close, but they're not horrifically expensive. Do you eat/like them?

I'd probably just take a sleeve of saltine crackers and some honey and make my own.

Also, I've decided that I'm going to restore the truck. Luckily, most of the work required is DIY. You think it's worthwhile to replace the piston rings, or just deal with the oil burning issue until the engine dies?

1 qt every 3k miles is what I would keep doing...unless this becomes an expensive problem.

You will have to do the math on what is wiser:

-full rebuild on your current motor

    -Replacement low mileage motor

    -new remanufactured motor.

If I cleaned up my truck and fixed some of the cosmetic issues, what does everybody think it's actually worth? Carfax says just $8,400 and KBB says just under $7,000. Neither of these values take into account the upgrades the truck has. Trade-in value seems to be $3,400-$3,600. However, I would never trade the truck in. I think that realistically, I could get $9,000-$10,000 if I fixed everything. If I addressed the current geriatric issues with the engine in one way or another, I could probably get $12,000.

I almost put a low-mileage replacement motor (50K miles) out of a totaled 2011 Tacoma, but I did a lot of research and decided that this wasn't the best idea since I didn't know the history of the donor truck. The replacement engine installed would have been like $7,200 or $7,700. The head gasket job was just under five grand for parts and labor, and it is still under warranty from the dealer until October 2024 (unlimited miles). Sure, the totaled truck could have been owned by a senior citizen who babied it and got totaled in accident that wasn't that elderly driver's fault, or it could have been sold by that elderly owner to somebody who beat the shit out of it for 20K of those 50K miles.

You just spent over $2k on a head gasket.
I'd pour the oil to it, until it quits.

If you want an OEM engine, you'll need to go Short block and throw on your head.
Or buy a reman. I've used ATK in the past. But not for a 2TR.

I know you love that truck Charlie.
But I'd save my money and look for a clean 3rd Gen.
2nd Gens are getting "old". You'd likely be buying into someone else's problems.

I don't know how the market is where you are for Japanese vehicles. I know around here a five lug from that year would be like seven Grand at the most

Same here. I just didn't want to discourage him.
The 5 luggers just don't bring what a 6 lug or V6 truck will.

If it were a 6 lug 2.7? Maybe $12k, maybe....
