Sorry, but I can't convince myself to buy a new Taco considering the current engine is basically 7 year old technology. Huge fan of the forum, love toyota trucks (currently own two), and love the 2nd gen body, but the 4.0 gets the same gas mileage as my Tundra 5.7 with 381 hp . Which sucks because I've wanted a 2nd gen for at least 3 years now.

Why hasn't Toyota put the new 4.0 in the Tacoma yet? It's more efficient, more powerful, and the same size. WTF?!

I could care less about a body redesign, deisel motor, heated seats, sunroof, etc. All I want is a 2nd gen with the new 4.0 because I plan on driving it for the next 8-10 years. And when the truck's 10 years old, I don't want a motor that is 17 years old from a technilogical standpoint.

What are the chances my wishes come true in a few months?

I wouldn't expect the Dual VVTi 4.0 until the redesign hits.

    Not gonna happen. I wish I could get a 4x4 with a 5-speed and a six-cylinder engine in a standard cab, now there's a laugh! :(

I understand. I wanted to have a newer technology Taco, mostly an upgraded engine to give better mpgs. I mean look around and see all these new vehicles with plenty of hp and getting good mpgs. But I just am too impatient I guess. I have wanted one of these trucks for a long time. One of the things also that swayed me not to wait was the new 4 Runner. I dont care for the new body style and it looks like the Tacoma is going to mirror it. :( A lot on here seem to like it, I think it's ugly. But It may grow on me, who knows? Also I dont really like buying a first year model due to any bugs with it.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I never measure it this way. The meter stays around 17.5 avg and I drive a mix of interstate (at 80 mph) and city.

You probably did the right thing - I also like the current body a lot more than the new 4runner..

Okay, so it sounds like I'm probably getting around 16 mpgs or so. well, that may help me pull the trigger. it's kind of funny b/c the thought of a redesign would actually make me want to buy one today (like TacoDawgfan).

I wonder if there will be any changes or even no 2012 tacomas, considering how the impacts of the tsunami/quake, are starting to come in .

Funnest Tacoma there never was: Reg cab 4.0 ,short bed ,2wd, prerunner.

yeah man just get one of these 2nd generations. the grass is always greener on the other side. so just stick the grass you can have. . . . look at it from the past not the future. for instance, my taco has the same horsepower and gets better gas mileage than my jeep before this. so im happy!

this is how i see it. Why would toyota make a new v6 when the one they have right now works perfectly fine with hardly any problems? They probably have a new motor being built right now but why try and fix something when it works perfectly fine? Thats just my 0.2.

But chances of it coming true OP. I think its pretty doubtful

Just wend over 406 miles on tank, 22MPG, had 3.25 gallons to go so I guess I could have gone about 478 if I wanted to go to fumes.

yeah, i hear everyone here. i need to just say screw and bite the bullet. after all, when the new one comes out in the next 1-3 years, at least the 2nd gen should still have a solid trade in value (if history repeats itself). which is pretty much the opposite of what's happened with my tundra.

If a redesigned Taco gets 20/27 with a V6 the 2nd gen resale will be toast. No one will pay $24,000 for a 2 year old Tacoma when they can get a new one for $30K WITH great Fuel mileage and a new body style and who know what else...4 leafs? LOL.

People are buying new now rather than saving $4000 on a used one. and nothing much has changed.
