I could offer an explanation, but it would almost certainly be considered not PC, and I don't wish to run afoul of the CoC or the Ban Hammer, so I'll keep it to myself.

One that I can offer, is that my sister has been a Math teacher at the 7th / 8th grade level in Long Beach, CA since the early 1900's. She is probably the only conservative at her school, and maybe the entire school district, so she has told me many horror stories about the lunacy of the CA educational system over the years. She relayed this tidbit to me a couple months ago. I don't remember if she said this was just her school district, or a State level decision.

In order to make it appear that students and schools are performing at a higher level than they actually are, students are no longer being held back or put into remedial math classes. Regardless of the students' grades or capabilities with the specific math subject, they are pushed into the next higher level of math at the start of their next scholastic year. Her district, at least, after doin some level of research, decided to assign the math courses to be at the level where only 15 - 25% of the students in that grade had shown they could handle that level - so they are artificially forcing the majority of students into what would otherwise be considered "advanced" math. The "logic" being that they can now make the claim that "Our Grade 7 students are all taking <what would be a Grade 8 or Grade 9 level math class>". This looks much better to the State Dept. of Education, rather than reporting the truth - the students are actually performing at 1 - 2 grade levels below where they actually are. Apparently test scores are no longer of any concern. It's all about the appearance, not the substance.

God damnit! Now I really, really wanna live in MT/WY/ID/UT. My wife would be OK with it, but her dad has COPD, so can't do higher elevations. And neither of her parents were interested in the extreme cold - they all lived in Minnie-Soda for several years in the early 80's, and had enough of that cold business. Me, on the other hand..... I need to see if I can make myself a bitmoji avatar to show my love of winter, snow, and cold weather :D:rofl:

But seriously, thank you so much for sharing these beautiful pictures. I will always be a mountain type person. Flat lands are way too boring. At least where we live in KY is all rolling hills, so it's not bad.

Public schools have been promoting poor preforming students for decades, especially in large cities. Unfortunately it’s just a math thing ,the rich stay healthy and the sick stay poor.

I know math has changed significantly since I was in school. I think I narrowly avoided the first wave of the shift. The school tried to put me in this new advanced algebra freshman year. One semester in and I was thinking no thanks, asked to go back to a regular class. Counselor was reluctant to let me go as it would put me behind on math - needed three passing grades/ years of math to graduate. Told them either way I’m screwed - leave me in this class and I guarantee I’m going to fail. So let me start fresh sophomore year.
Well teacher sophomore year was a worthless dick. Only had a teaching job because he was a coach. Nearly failed first semester. Asked counselors to move me. They refused. Went over their heads to the principal- family friend - and got him to agree to move me. I wasn’t alone in having issues with that teacher. I think 90% of the students failed his class. About 75% asked to transfer out same as me. They did end up firing him a few years later only because the sport he coached started losing
Got a new teacher, got straight A’s, honor roll, all that jazz.
Fast forward to just a few years ago and I’m at a friends house. Their kid is struggling with his math homework. They tell me so see if I can help. No idea what the hell they’re trying to teach that kid. The three of us - 2 bachelors and a masters degree all in engineering related fields between us and we can’t figure out 3rd grade math.

If a Doctor can prescribe it and falls under Durable Medical Equipment (DME) then yes

Kenetrek Ortho Eversteps which are the Mountain Extremes with ankle support braces, I got a script from Sports Med doc for them. $400 pair but insurance doesn't cover them. However they are covered under Flexible Spending Account. So if planned properly yes it can be done.

Hope everything turns out well for you Dad!

LAUSD is the issue, not politics. They do that with every subject, pass it on the the next year's teacher. They have never tried to change the way they teach to help the students, they try to get the child to change to fit their teaching style. Not every kid can open a book and pass a class, some need visual and practical learning, or a teacher that can actually teach a concept.

In the 60s they had us go from area to area to learn what we wanted, when we wanted. It was groovy...and stupid.

At least in my state every person I know who is in the profession is frustrated, it's more about teaching to the test nowadays.

Kalispell. Only 2900 feet, about the same snow as Minneapolis on average and we don't get the -20s for a week straight. Yes it'll get down there but it doesn't stay like Minnesota. 31 years in Minnesota before moving out here.

Wild to think that 3 weeks ago I was dealing with a -50* temp. 100* variation in such a short time… crazy

That's why I like the desert. Even when it's blistering hot it doesn't hurt it's just hot.

It does create other issues. You just learn to work with what's out there.
