Does anyone know the part number for the CV Axle nut castle retainer or a suitable replacement? Whoever was working on the hub last neglected to put it back on, and I currently just have a cotter pin and the bare nut. I've tried finding an aftermarket retainer, but the largest internal diameter I could find is 22mm.

Generic, go to Napa they’ll have one for less than a dollar.

    ADD or manual hubs?

ADD CVs are identical from 95.5 to 04 Taco and 96 to 02 4R
Manual hubs are identical from 95.5 to 00

The one for the 2nd Gen truck are 26mm at the tabs.
    I just measured a spare I had.

Maybe look one up for a 2nd Gen?

    4 run, 2 don't
Manual hubs use a lock ring for capturing the CV axle

I'll grab the OP a part number here shortly since they're saved on my PC but I'm currently stress testing it :burp:

Yes. I'll take pictures with calipers later, they're for sure 28mm.

If anything I'll head to the junkyard and grab one, but it would be nice to know if anyone makes them anymore.

    Yeah, obviously

Manual hubs use a lock ring, not a retainer

Only thing I can think of is that you have an aftermarket CV axle

This obviously won't change the shaft diameter or anything, but it could be that a larger nut could be used but you stated nothing about what you are running (more information helps you to help us)

I'd opt into buying a new nut as well

Thanks for the links! Yeah, I bought some OEM cv's from a user here. One of the axles I replaced was definitely aftermarket but had the stock 35mm nut and retainer, the other looks identical to the OEM, and only had the stock nut with not retainer.

But the cv diameter shouldn't change. I help changed 4r to Taco with Napa, autozone, carquest, pepboys, Oreilly axles and you can litterily reuse the factory nut

Yeah I know the diameter doesn't change, if you read what I said, I literally said it doesn't.

But in my actual experience, sometimes an aftermarket CV axle will come with a nut that has a larger shoulder on it, requiring a larger socket.

That CV axle also had it's own retainer due to the larger shoulder on the nut.

It's why I posted a link to an OEM nut and retainer in case he does have one of those larger nuts.

I can see why you went 1 tons now :luvya:

It's either a 35 or 36mm socket that fits oem CV axle nuts on a 4R or Tacoma, but my CV axle actually had me buying a 41mm socket.

I still own that socket and have never found another use for it
