Anyone know what the “hat” is called? I’m usually pretty good at googling but can’t figure it out.

There is no easily accessible cig lighter in the grand Highlander and not all dash cams can be powered by usb. I might have to hardwire it and was curious about the little jumper cable.

 

Want to know how I know you're old? You (and me) still call it a cig lighter when they've been +12v ports for a decade or two. Remember when cars had legit ash trays under the lighter??

 

This made me feel old, so I went to google my parents' family car. They got this when I was about 9, and I think kept it for 15 years or so. 1985 Fif Avenue.



Funny parts: eventually because we're boys, we got mom to approve having a single 18" sub in the trunk powered via rear-deck speaker lines to an amp, crossed over at 60hz. That thing pounded - course from the outside, it sounded like six bags of al-yoo-min-ee-um cans in the trunk.
The car came with a 318 V8. 140hp. From a 5.2L. Unreal. That's about 26hp/liter. If that Highlander is not a hybrid it's making about 110hp/liter.
Car weighed about 3700lbs, giving it a 0-60 of about 12 seconds, and a 1/4 mile of close to 20 seconds. (sigh)
Once i was riding in my brother's car following our parents. His car was a 69 roadrunner (383 + .030 over, etc); probably a mid 13 second 1/4 mile car. My dad tried to race him. It was pathetic. Poor Fif.

I can’t remember what make or model it was but I remember riding in the way back of a station wagon no one batting an eye

I think the station wagon was one of those with fake wood… well it was probably real wood then… side panels

 

Was it a Chevy Caprice Estate? Thats what we had.

Sitting all the way in the back was the best place though. Seatbelts and safety be damned

I am assuming her GH has a “smart” style rearview mirror… like self dimming? If so, I believe it should have a power port on the backside of it, maybe a usb-c port. You can plug the dash cam into that.

 

Ohh, I’ll have to check. Thanks for the idea. It’s a digital rearview mirror. Having the usb or usb c there would be nice. But then, it might not have the parking sensor active. Most have gotten rid of the internal battery and want to be hardwired. This car has sooo many things that can go wrong

The mirror is connected to the rear cameras so when you flip it up it goes into the camera mode so you don’t see in the car.

 

Dongar might have an adapter that will work. I used one in the 2019 to power my dash cam.

 

Yea, either directly on the back of the mirror…


…or underneath the black box, you can get the Dongar adapter like @Mickey65 said and it’ll be plug and play. Should have zero effect on messing with any other features… should?!?! lol

 

Yep, checking out for those too. I say one brand has a nice integrated option but they don’t sell it separately. The dongar says not for digital rear view but maybe it’s just not been updated. I’ll reach out to them and ask. I would much prefer that option but I might just have to hardwire it… not that it’s really hardwiring something using a fuse jumper thing. Can’t recall the name right now.
