The thread. A few threads popped up this week looking for recommendations for the initial oil change.

I’m disappointed in myself. I try to avoid oil threads. Yet somehow I decided to read some bits of this one. Completely missing the date farmer who never changes her oil.

First post is really all you need. Shows you how much metal is floating around in a brand new engine at 3k miles

I’ve never owned a vehicle long enough where it would be any type of concern for me. But if I was that worried or keeping it for the long haul, then I would just change early.

Even if the motor has all that floating around, how much is it actually going to hurt the motor?

It's not in the slightest. These get posted in every forum every few weeks with people who have a single data point they don't understand in full panic mode. The individual testing only serves the purpose of whipping people into a frenzy to sell more tests to others who also don't understand the data worried theirs might be "bad" too. If you do want to use these oil tests correctly, do them every time and paste your results into Excel, because the actual purpose for these companies is monitoring over time through consistent testing and trend analysis - not comparing data to other unrelated data points. If over time you see a sudden substantial jump in some value, that is the correct time to panic.

Change it at 1k if you'd like (I do just out of old habits) but stick to every 5k without fail. In the end, your personal driving habits and long-term maintenance practices will have several orders of magnitude greater an impact than some minuscule amount of completely normal break-in metals and chemicals from the manufacturing process.

Not sure anyone can answer that question for you without some sort of study of 100 engines under the same operating conditions 50 of which get that oil changed early and 50 get it at 10k. And then they get run to 200k miles and opened up

They don't. Even if you changed the oil at 500 miles those particles have been circulated through the engine thousands of times already.

I was surprised to see the 10k interval when we bought our 3rd gen. It felt wrong, especially since our 2010 was recommended every 5k. I got the 3rd gen in for its first oil change at 5k and every 5k since, mostly to address my skepticism. Can't hurt, as it were....

The 2nd gen is just under 200k miles and going great, and we've had perfect attendance with the oil changes, so I'm sticking with that.

Does anyone else feel the difference right after an oil change? My wife used to not believe me, until we sold her RAV4 and she started driving the 2nd gen. It's a nice feeling, though I'm not sure it should be.....

I agree those people who change their oil just by the way it looks and what they read on the internet are just wasting their money and time. They act like these motors are made of plastic.

This may have been mentioned already but I honestly didn't feel like sorting through 28 pages to see....
    I do mine every 5k.
My concern is always the fuel dilution.

It's that high at less than 10k. I can't imagine what it would be at 10.

i asked about this scenario in the past but got no feedback, presumably because i didnt include a photo of a pop tent with a pro grill on it.

    anyone see high fuel dilution?

This thread was mainly about the first oil change not subsequent. 2.5% fuel sucks.

    My 2nd was 1250
My third was just under 5k

    I agree with your ideology

Interesting that copper is so damn high in both of our cases … wonder why. Silicone makes
    Sense based on sealants etc
