Do you think the 4th Gen will hold it's value?

One of the reason I bought my 3rd gen new is because I knew it would hold it's value. I bought a new 2018 trd off road long bed double cab v6 auto for 36,000. It has 56,000 miles and I bet I could still sell it for mid to high 20's. With the 4th gen priced so much higher, I'm wondering if they will hold their value like Tacoma's previously had. I know it's early and we won't know until they start showing up on the used market, but I was just wondering what others thought about this?

 

I would say they will hold great value, I also think for the next few years the 3rd gens will hold a strong value because many people wanting a Tacoma might still be in the mindset that 4cyl turbo trucks are a no no, until proven otherwise

 

I think there is going to be several factors and the way they play out in the next 12 to 18 months that will really be the determining factor.

1. Fed rate - will stay same for next 2 months.
2. Used market supply - Vroom is dumping a ton on cars on the auction market.
3. Used market demand - already slowing
4. Consumer spending/debt load breaking point.
5. 4th gen could be a Turd?

 

6. Starting price and dealer markups are sky high.

 

Yup, and list keeps going on...I have been waiting for it to pop but they keep propping it up.

 

Yep. With other brands you know soon as you buy new you are losing a good amount of money right away. Such a huge price increase now then buying a new Tacoma might be no different. Time will tell I suppose.

 

With the outrageously expensive price tag one would sure hope so.

 

Was that 2018 $36k price you paid or was that the MSRP? I think for people paying MSRP you will definitley take a bigger hit than in previous years. At some point there going to be back to 5-10% off. I just don't know if the PRos will ever get that discount. This is the reason I've been looking at toyotas they usually had the least amount of discounts, I was never going to buy one of the big 3 for MSRP.

 

My 2021 was nearly 12% off MSRP. If dealer lots get stuffed with $56,000 Tacomas, it might happen again. But you are still looking at a $49,000 truck.

 

That was the all in price I paid. No idea in relation to MSRP. I didn’t shop around either. Just walked into a dealer and bought one. I was young and dumb…

I think with a toyota even the gen 4 your still going to get the best resale value unless you pay over MSRP. Unless they have similar motor issues as the new tundra.

 

All of the Tundras are $5000 off here. That means you can get them to knock a lot more off.

I would not buy a Tacoma at MSRP. They’ll be discounting the ridiculous prices after the new thing wears off.

 

They are nice, but even $6k off, they're still expensive. I drove by a GMC dealer today and their lot was full!

 

Now is a really good time to get a full size on any brand if that is what you want. Crazy the change in just the last few months.

Vroom used cars are simply moving from one dealer to another - there is no "dumping" imo. The # of cars is a drop in the bucket compared to the shortage of used cars right now.
The high interest rates is what keeps people from buying their cars, in my opinion. Mazda offered 0% financing on CX5 and there was a significant jump in sales. I think everyone is hoping for the interest rates to go down so that they can shove the high MSRP down the consumer's throat.

 

In my area there is no longer a shortage of used cars....or new ones unless they are the ones in high demand like a grand highlander. Rates are not going down anytime soon so any manufacturer that eats the rate is going to drive sales.
