Still crazy that you can buy a '24 4Runner and its the same 5 speed.
Might be the last simple 4x4 wagon to exist that you can buy new...can't think of any others that haven't changed in that long.

It's always a funny argument from the 3rd Gen Tacoma and 5th Gen 4Runner crew -

WHY IS MY NEW (3rd Gen Taco/5th Gen 4R) SO PLAIN FOR A 2020-2023 AND STILL COSTS $50k?!

Then the same group OMG WHY DO THEY HAVE ALL THIS TECHNOLOGY, THIS IS WHY THEY WERE SO RELIABLE NOW THESE COMPUTERS SUCK

It's a dinosaur but that's what makes it good. Boss has been through a couple rental cars recently after his Yukon got hit, and he hated the Highlander, liked the 4runner, and now is in a Q7, but is shopping for a 4runner  Toyota has been smart with leaving the recipe alone for this long. It'll be int to see how the approach the next generation as they don't want to mess up their cash cow.

Imagine what it'll be like when the 6th gens debut haha.
I like the 5th gens, I mean, they're pricey, but as someone who doesn't like big screens and no knobs and other added complexities, I get why people buy em. I'm sure the new ones will be packed full of stuff.

Yeah I steered my dad toward one almost six years ago and its been a great buy. They have some drawbacks, but I'd run one. I'm curious to see what they do with it, especially with the new Cruiser and the Sequoia in the lineup.

I would like a word with the engineers that designs the starter location on the 3.4 autos…..

Gutless, thirsty and truck like handling. But, I think of the pendulum swings too far to the Sequoia/LC it'll be a mistake. They will sell a ton of them but in ten years could have a different reputation.

Nothing wrong with it, just need a swivel for the top bolt and several extensions.

I went over the crossmember when I pull mine out; easy.

It's not that bad. The manual is easier to fish out but both come out over the frame with some finesse.

I pull mine up and out over the wheel; need to undo the transmission dip stick tube.

Keep in mind you'll have a little o-ring at the end so just replace it when you reinstall.

Bring starter back towards the rear of the vehicle, dip it down towards the ground, then pull up and out.

Yea I tried all sorts of ways. Undid the trans dipstick and moved the brake line over and it kept hitting on the exhaust and control arm. Just decided to pull the control arm off

Remember it being really tight but that's how I recall doing it on the 4runner. Possibly some slight variation in the frame helped. Either way, good luck!

I think I "twisted" it slightly cause one corner of the starter sticks up slightly.

I'm 99.9% sure I followed up this path just behind the manifold and only pulled it forward after getting the dipstick out -

I think that last sentence is key. I don't want that to happen, but the more complex things keep getting, seems inevitable that the old reliability will take a bit of a hit, at least in certain aspects.

    So, she has really grown

    20240203_121524.jpg

She's pushing over 5" in legspan which means she'll most likely hit or exceed the 6" max that they can reach

She's over 4 to 4.5 years old, so hoping for another 7-10 years of life left with her

What way did you use to get it out?

Way I described? Or did you pull the UCA?
