Note: in Canada, our days are only 18 American hours. So that makes it more challenging.

Meanwhile…..no sign of any 2024s in the BC Interior…

I went to check out a Limited at the dealer today but someone took delivery of it before I got there.
They said they had like 20 something of them coming in mid Feb, so people are getting them

Anyone notice in the vids of the production trucks that the door panels have red reflectors? It has been ages since I have seen a car come with them.

My 2012 Tacoma is rated 17/21 and I consistently get better than 21 in city driving. The mpg doesn't change much on the highway (sometimes it's a little worse) because I drive 75-84mph. The EPA MPG highway test is 10.26 miles at an average 48.3mph. Takes more throttle to drive at 75+.

So yes, most people won't get 25mpg on the highway but that's because most people go much faster than 48mph on the highway. ymmv.

Hybrid is heavier, but in city driving your rpm (and therefore throttle position) through the gears is much higher than when steady state cruising at 30-35mph. If the battery/motor is doing a lot of that work to get you up to speed, you're going to save fuel. 1-2 in the Tundra and probably 2-3 in the Tacoma since it's the same tq increase in a lighter vehicle.

Makes me wonder why Toyota didn't use the 10spd out of the Tundra. Tacoma with its 8spd isn't going to produce Tundra with its 10spd mpg numbers. Hybrid or not, the transmission won't allow it.

For what it’s worth, the new EPA tests (since 2007) also incorporate a high speed driving segment in the equation. That portion includes driving up to 80mph.

the results of 5 different tests are all included in an equation with various coefficients to weight the result to some sort of accuracy. But it’s not just the old sub-60mph test like it was way back

Because the 2.4t is paired with the 8spd in every other Toyota and Lexus vehicle where it’s available.

that wasn’t an honest question was it?

    Still only averages 48.3mph.

That’s only one of the tests. And consumption isn’t just the result of that whole test divided by time

then if you dig into the regulations, you can find that all of those tests are combined in different ways to get weighted results numbers. They don’t just publish the 48mph test as the highway number anymore

I'm guessing the Tundy has a lower rear axle ratio and needs more overdrive gears to keep rpm low at highway speeds. Even though the 2.4T has a lot of low end torque, you don't want to be on the highway at 1,000rpm.

More of a curiosity question than anything else, but will Gen 4's be arriving literally every day from here forward, or do they come in "blocks"?

There's a City rating, a Hwy rating, and a Combined rating. The Combined is weighted and averaged. The High Speed test is weighted averaged with City & Hwy for the Combined rating.

2012 Tacoma doesn't have an mpg computer, but when I drive the wife's 4R with the cruise set at 55-60, it gets way better gas mileage than when set at 75-84. The EPA Highway rating is in no way representative of what you will get cruising at 70+mph. For all but the most aerodynamic cars, it will be much lower.

Most vehicles will get their best fuel economy at 55, beyond that expect a reduction in fuel economy of -3% at 60, -8% at 65, -17% at 70, -23% at 75 and -28% at 80. While EPA estimates are way off for many people they are a valuable tool for comparison purposes.
