I recently replaced my head gasket on my 1996 Tacoma 3.4. When I started it up again it had a loud clicking/ticking sound in the engine compartment. It also has a whooshing sound near the intake manifold but hard to tell. I was very very careful with putting the camshaft in the right location and the number 1 cylinder at the top. When driving it feels like it did before the head gasket with no jerks or rough movements. I can’t till exactly where it is coming from or where to start. I occasionally get an error code. P0171. Any advice would be super helpful. I’m trying to up a video file but can’t find a format to do it

So I bought one from harbor freight and super super cool tool but hard to find the issue. I think I norrowed it down to the passenger side possibly the camshaft.

I took apart the valve cover and I am getting plenty of oil everything is in line were it’s suppose to. The neighbor told me to run the engine with the valve cover off (very messy) to see if I can identify the issue. Everything spins freely and no obvious explanation. I might have over tightened the bolts holding down the camshaft when I initially put it in. I didn’t have an inch pound torque wrench and had to calculate with a ft/lb torque wrench.

The whooshing sound I think is small vacuum leak. I did a quick vaccume test and running around 14 when suppose to be around 20. When reconnecting hoses to the plastic fittings one of the fittings broke. I super glued it back together and it’s holding well but I think possibly the cause of the whooshing sound. Which brings me to the next question. What is this part where the two hoses are going into. It’s small and looks like a switch valve. Any ideas?

AC idle up valve. It's easy to break.

Is it a AC idle up valve or is it a vaccum valve? It looks more like the vaccum valve but I’m not sure?

I've got one sitting on my shelf if you need it. I pulled it off when I converted to an aftermarket computer since it's not really needed anymore

So looking online on how to replace the AC idle up valve it appears to be on the bottom side of the throttle body. The part I’m trying to replace is in front of the intake manifold and behind the top of the timing belt/timing belt cover. The part I’m trying to replace appears to be just for air

The part under the throttle body is actually the idle air control valve. The AC idle up valve is only found on 95 through 97 models because it's job is later taken on by the idle air control valve on later models. But I can assure you that part in front is the AC idle up valve and the reason you're not finding much information on it is because it was only present on three model years and it's kind of unconventional

The history of the Tacomas are incredible. I’m having to rebuild most of this 1996 Tacoma and finding out bits and pieces every day. I super appreciate the help find this part.

No worries, if you want this one I can send it to you, not doing me any good anymore just having it sit around on the shelf.

Yes! Please! Thank you so much! It would most likely fix the vaccine leak in my truck.

To make it even more confusing, Toyota just has it listed as a "solenoid valve".

I just had a thought about your description of the sound. Does it do any of this with the HVAC off?

No change noted when heater or AC is running but definitely speeds up with acceleration. I was poking around with the stethoscope today and it sounds like little bells ringing. I poked around on the exhaust manifold on the passenger side and heard it very well about as good as I did on the valve cover. Looking up exhaust leaks it doesn’t sound like other online versions where it sounds more like flapping. I will recheck the torque on the bolts to the exhaust as a just in case. Attached below is the best I got at the moment which obviously sounds terrible quality. Tomorrow I will try to create a better YouTube video of the sound.

Oof. Sounds like either a really out of spec valve/cam contact, or a rod bearing. Hope I'm wrong though

Double check the ignition wires are in the correct cylinders though
