    Regards to poll:

Why would you cut a trailer safety chain to make it shorter?

You won't always tow with the same tiw vehicle or have the same hitch. Having a chain long enough to adjust is a must.

Twisting the trailer safety chains to make them shorter is a perfectly acceptable adjustment.

Doing this for a chain not used for a safety chain is not acceptable.

As a person who has repaired countless trailers, I just cringe when I pick up a trailer to repair and the chains are too short to attach to my hitch. Cross my fingers and head for the shop.

I replace the chain and bill the customer.

If I know I’m gonna be towing with only my truck, I adjust the chains on my trailer(s) accordingly. I’ve only had to cut one trailer I had, it was a brand new trailer and they were about 5 links too long, it was 3/8” chain

I’ve worked on several trailers where the chain was worn down because they drug and the person didn’t care.

    RE: Poll

Never knotted or twisted a chain - I do always use them and do a walk around light check before taking off.

Sooo not saying they are experts in anything, but if they accept it as a practice then it shouldn't be much of an issue.
Now I expect to be roasted and set straight.

Of course! This will be more of a technical and less of an artistic build. Actually, this will be closer to a machining operation @six5crèéd than a woodwork build. I wish I had a machining center but, I have to make do the long way.

Please read the link here https://mechanicalelements.com/twisting-safety-chains/
And you will see twisting to shorten reduces chain strength by 70%. Also, please watch the video in the link for actual testing.
When i was a youngster I would twist.
Once I started designing machines that could kill people if I messed up, i truly started to understand strengths of materials and forces on materials. I have been using loops and zip ties for 25 years.

Thanks again guys. I’m still blown away by this past week!!!! :amen:
I still have two companies with interviews on the schedule for tomorrow and Tuesday. I need to send emails out in the morning to cancel those interviews.

Had a great morning today followed by a great church service. Made eggs Benedict with bacon for the family. I added the butter too soon when whisking the hollandaise sauce. So it ended up on the runny side. But still delicious.

Also got to enjoy some ice cream yesterday with my oldest son! We stopped buy an antique shop and I found this set of starrett collets for a watchmakers lathe. Pretty cool stuff.

Twisting safety chains is very common on rental equipment !! If you never need to change your hitch or tow vehicle.

Better to long then to short The chains. are way over kill for most trailers
