Anyone here that stands behind running an XL oil filter? Want to try to get 500k out of this truck as a fun goal

Only reason I run a bigger filter is so I can just dump 6qts of oil during a change.

Don't make fun of me guys the shop said they couldn't hear the noise and it's gone now haha. They said it was probably the rust on the rotors sitting in the rain

So I got educated today, about my '09, 4.0 fuel pump. BTW, this truck is NA, I added SC to my 2020, but enjoy watching and learning on this active thread, so thought I would share here. This '09 is my winter truck, with plow.

So my truck died driving home, would start and die in about 3 seconds, over and over. Then discovered I could pump the pedal and get the revs up. It still dies about every 3-5 seconds, but could get it to catch again without exercising the starter. Seems as long as i keep moving the pedal, it would likely run for another few seconds and cut out again. Managed to catch it long enough to get into gear, Smoke a tire, and drove it home in low with high revs, cutting out every 5 sec. or so. But made it home.

Had me baffled, so searched the internet, and learned about the Resistor unit for the fuel pump. How many of you know about this thing? For those that don't;there is a resistor unit, that reduces power to the fuel pump, described as being for the purpose of extending the life of the fuel pump. On Start, Acceleration and WOT, the ECU runs power directly to the fuel pump, but at any steady throttle including idle; the ECU runs power to the fuel pump through this resistor. Resistor reduces the voltage and output of the pump.

My resistor unit, was corroded by salt, and was at such high resistance, that the pump basically turned off every time the ECU utilized the resistor. The test was to jumper the two wires in the connector with a paperclip (zero resistance) and the truck runs great. Will run the cheat, till the new part arrives.

For you boosted 4.0's, you may want to examine this or test it? Just wondering what would happen as the resistance goes up on a boosted engine :( This resistor unit is a 2x4 inch aluminum Finned block mounted in front of the battery, held in place with a bolt of 10mm head, so is easy to access.

Thanks for all the great information on this thread, hope this works as giving a little back.

iirc @12TRDTacoma always dumped 6 and never had problems. i figure its no worse to be a lil' high or low from ideal.

Yup, definitely something to check before assuming the fuel pump is bad. Your symptoms definitely pointed to it. I used to go down to Baja like every weekend, and I think I found out about it when I first put a kill switch in my old truck, because I interrupted the power supply to the fuel pump.

He also runs the oversized filter. not a major deal but dump and not have to worry would be nice but also good to know if it’s over filled after 5 and whatever it seems to be ok.

Yessir I just dump 6 and don't even check anymore. Good to go and has never done me wrong.

Now that the truck is starting to have higher mileage and I've seen the internals once before I'm going to start switching over to AMSOil over traditional, as I've seen how well a job it does keeping the internals nice, fresh, and clean.

I don’t mind the half bottle. My GX takes 6.5 so if I buy a case of oil, I can do both vehicles.

The only reason I dislike the half bottle is due to the Tacoma dipstick being utterly useless at measuring the oil level so it's impossible to tell if you have enough in.
