Found on Ebay for $90 a rim. Tires from Wal-Mart for $200. Just trying to find the cheapest way to see if I like this look. I like this look. Will get some better tires, powder coat the rims, and get some caps.

If you don’t want to pay for powder coating consider rattle can. Check out post#923. A little elbow grease but good results.

Steel wheels wear well, they don't necessarily stand out as having cosmetic damage like an immaculate alloy does. This means you can casually paint them repeatedly, and let that finish fade if you want too and it probably wont look conspicuous.

I had steelies on an older car and eventually painted them brown and put a thin coat of semigloss black over that. Interesting effects as they fade and get dusty/filthy.

has anyone rattle canned two coats of two different colors, one right after the other? Did they mix . . . ?

I want to try green under gray or pink under gray

I think steelies having no lines (just circle shapes) can make things pop because your eye is like processing less 3d detail

Is there any company out there making new steel wheels that fit the Tacoma, like 16x8 or 17x8 with 0 offset that looks like FJ wheels?
I have a 23 TRD DC and would really like a set to replace the factory ones. The factory wheels are nice but I would rather have something different and simple, The steel FJ wheels fit the bill perfectly, for me anyway.

the fj steelies are what you want, but these are visually the same, just .5” narrower. the fj steelies are 17x7.5

    Hey guys,

I currently have 16” 3rd Gen Tacoma steelies that I had powder coated in a shade of white about 8 months ago.

I am considering having them recoated to more of a cream / tan color. I spray painted my spare wheel tan for a reference, as can be seen in the image.

    What is your opinion?
Keep ‘em white or go tan?

Personally I prefer the white as it "pops" against the MGM.

Why not a shade of gray. I thought about gray for my truck but white won out. Massey Ferguson gray is a nice shade.

I like the white better also. I picked up a set of FJ steelies that I'm thinking about painting white, but I'm still not sure how it would look on a red first Gen. I guess that's the good thing about painting them, you can change the color if you don't like it. I'm just waiting for it to warm up so I can paint them.

    @Peekoost
Thanks for the feedback. I think white would look nice on a red 1st gen. I’ve seen them on a red 90’s 4x4 and they looked great. An homage to old school days.

That was kind of what I was thinking, the old school look. If I could find a used white camper shell, that would be nice too. And again, if I don't like it, I'll repaint them. Thanks.

Hi All first time post. I picked up this clean 16 hole steel wheel from a wrecker for $50 thinking it fit a tacoma but the center bore width is too narrow roughly 4.125in or approx 105mm. Anyone know how to identify the vehicle make/model for this wheel? The local toyota parts person wasnt helpful. Code on the wheel is J 16x7JJ DOT CMC 11 18 WT 21. Id like to pick up a new or relatively rust free set of 16 hole 16x7 steelies for my first gen 02 tacoma 4x4 if anyone knows a source toyota parts wants nearly $200ea not willing to pay that much. Figured out the newer gen tacomas backspace is 5.25 tucked in too much to be stable with my rv popup camper. Can someone tell me what the exact offset and backspace is on first gen 16x7 spare wheels? Thanks!

By all we can see that is an OEM Tacoma spare.... centerbore should be 106mm I think. Could just be some corrosion on your hubs or even the wheel. Should be a tight fit.

Are these the GM 17 inch steelies ? They keep popping up on marketplace around me and was wondering if they would fit my third gen.

Had the hardest time finding photos of cement tacomas with black steelies… So here’s a few for anyone looking!

Got mine installed the other day!
2nd/3rd gen Tacoma spare steelies wrapped in Falken Wildpeak AT4W 255/85r16. The truck is mechanically stock, they fit with no rubbing — haven’t been aligned yet.

    Looking sharp!
But if those are AT4W's, why isn't the lettering popping out? I thought that the new Wildpeaks had very pronounced lettering on the sidewall. Are they less pronounced on one side of the tire?

Thank you! Yes one side had very pronounced raised lettering, not too big on the look of it so I had the tech face that side in.

After many hours of research and considering all the different tire brands / models, sizes, load ranges, tread, wet/dry/snow ratings, I made my decision.

    Falken Wildpeak AT4W
    265 75R 16 SL (Standard Load).

No rubbing so far, but with the 3rd Gen Tacoma Steelies (16 x 7, +30 offset), the front tires are quite close to the upper control arm/steering knuckle. It was hard to capture the angle with my camera. The spacing looks tighter in the image due to the camera angle, but it is still close non the less. The shop that installed them said it's close but will be fine. I'll keep you guys updated if there is any rubbing but I think it should be fine considering the steering knuckle doesn’t move towards the tire (correct me if I’m wrong).
Only thing I can think of is being aware of the space if airing down.

Overall I think these tires really improve the appearance of the truck and I'm optimistic that they will perform well.

I've had them on for two days and only driven them back and forth from work on pathed roads. As far as I can tell the truck doesn't feel any slower or heavier than the stock 245 75R 16 Toyo Open Country A31's. Maybe they're a tiny bit noticeable when the wheel is fully turned at low speeds but that is all I have noticed. Driving comfortability has definitely increased in terms of reducing turbulence.

I hope this helps / clarifies for people who are curious.
