Close to a volcano but not quite. It is a laccolith, which is a similar to a volcano except the magma never makes it to the surface. It produces a bulge in the earth and in this case that bulge increases as two tectonic plates are pushed together, forming the Appalachian mountain chain. Add in a few ice age glaciers here and there and a lot of erosion over a long period of time and you have what you see today.

Years ago when teachers told you things I tended to believe them so back around 1972 when I was told Mount Katahdin was a long dormant Volcano I accepted it as fact. I stand corrected .

I guess they were correct about Mount Hood !But I still wait for California to slide into the ocean. When I went to California I just knew it would let go while I was there. Drive to the Ocean got my feet wet and headed for the Mountains .

1 for 3 is not very good .

In the interest of full disclosure, I did not think it was a dormant volcano but I was not sure so the internet was my friend and provided me with enough information to sound intelligent. There WAS more to cut and paste but I have been working on the skill of brevity.

I'm guessing we're around the same age...

As I've reflected over the years, I found alot of what I was taught in grade school was either:
    1) correct at the time it was taught and since updated; or
    2) sugar coated fairy-tales.

I'm hoping you were taught what was correct at the time :oldglory:

Pulled out the B7100 and the 20' ladder today and put a rope on a bucket and cleaned the gutters. First time doing this since back injury.
I'll know more about pain in a bit.
    Felt good really!
Only halfway filled the B7100 bucket up:thumbsup:.

Getting ready to cut the dado for the lower shelf. It is challenging when you have to do things the hard way. But, i will persevere.

Hard to say I spent those early years in the office or in the library
Till I drove the principal nuts and was dumped on the poor library lady. We got along great I got to read the whole school day and no longer was bored in class

Another legend crossed over last night.
Toby Keith, passed peacefully at age 62 after a long battle with stomach cancer.
Thanks for all the great music Toby.:pray:
