OEM Camera Connection below Dash

Ok guys tried this and it wont work on my 09 tacoma double cab. Has rearview mirror camera. Trying to use in my pioneer hu but it will not work. Used v crimp connectors. checked too see i was getting voltage through video cable (brand new i bought) and was. Got the trigger wire hooked up and plugged video cable into the R.Cin on back of unit which is brown plug via manual. It goes to camera mode when in reverse but no picture ?? wiggled wires and got it setup up in unit. any ideas ?? Thank You

 

Do i need one of them voltage thingies ? or how many volts should i be getting through video cable ?

 

None. The video cable should only carry video signal from the camera to the video input of the HU. Does the HU go into video mode when you shift into reverse? The last time I did one, on a Honda Civic, we needed to power a wire to tell the camera to go into video mode when the car was shift into reverse. As I recall (it's been 5-6 years) we tapped off of the back up light circuit somehow.

So, you need the video signal (two wires) and the "trigger" signal to the HU. That should only require one wire. The back up camera itself is powered when the truck is shifted into reverse.

There's probably someone who can give you a better explanation, but don't put power through your video cable.

 

What voltage are you reading? The stock camera runs on 6vdc, not 12. The rear view mirror setup normally supplies the 6v to the camera.

 

Yes the hu goes into camera mode when put into reverse. I ohmed the rca cable to make sure my connections were good. It was around 6v when i hooked up meter .

and when i shift into reverse i still have the voltage through the rca cable (checked before hooking up and my camera in rear view mirror is working fine). Im thinking its my head unit its like 5 to 8 yrs old.

 

you really shouldn't have much voltage on the rca cable.

there's a second pair of wires that go back to the camera to power it up, those wires should have a 6v converter on them, and should read 6v when you're in reverse.

 

so soundman are you saying after tapping into wires i need a converter ?? or you sayining with it all hooked up and after i shift to reverse there should be 6v on the rca cable and if so it should work ?? because the rearview mirror camera is always working correctly

 

i misunderstood, i thought you were no longer using the mirror in the arrangement. the mirror should be providing power to the camera.

it almost sounds like the rca connection is to the wrong pair of wires going to the camera. typically rca/composite video signals are around 0.2-2v.

 

Just started trying to add a camera to my dad’s ‘06 and realized there is no hole in the tailgate for the harness. I was not expecting that.

Pioneer MVH 1400NEX in my 2nd gen this weekend and did the fuse-box video intercept along with the drivers-side kick board reverse light signal tap.
Worked beautifully.
After a test drive, I decided to open it all up again to hard-wire the handbrake signal wire to chassis ground to keep all of the menu options available and in doing so I encountered the grey lines on the video feed.
Unpack, move the wires around and repack in the dash and it was resolved - in case anyone else hits this and needs a fix.

I am glad that I found this thread as I am getting ready to upgrade my head unit. I have a 2012 non jbl with camera in rear view mirror. I am going with the Alpine ilx507 from crutchfield most likely. Any particular video cable you guys recommend? Also what is the easiest way to bypass the park brake to access the unit functions at anytime. I have heard people are complaining about it ?

Looking for some help.... I have a 2010 sport with a joying radio. I have followed the op directions. Have also tried tapping into the white and red as well with no luck. Radio is switching to the camera when put in reverse but showing no signal. Am I missing a setting within the radio? Any help is appreciated

If your still stuck on it, Change the video input settings in Joying Head unit. To a lower quality. Worked for me.

Just finished this mod on my 09 prerunner that has the backup camera in the mirror. Tried using t taps, but didn't have much luck so I frankensteined some spade connectors to shove into the camera connector. T tap did work for the reverse trigger. Thanks for all the great info

 

I realize thread necromancy is probably discouraged, but I'm using this thread to try and hook up the reverse cam (in addition to the rearview mirror) to my nav screen on my 2013. Is there a wiring harness to connect the RCA cable to the head unit? I don't see this mentioned and maybe I'm missing something simple. This is the back of my head unit. No 'video in' or any equivalent.
