An alternative I’ve heard to the onside kick is to let the team choose to take the ball 4th and 15 from their own 25. Not sure if I like that idea, but onside kicks are so rare now. Used to be about 1-in-7, but with the rule change made about 5 years ago it’s about 1-in-18 now.

Huh, team ahead by several scores could conceivably never get the ball at all to finish the game. Instead of the team behind getting one shot to keep the ball the team ahead gets one shot to get it.

 

Yea, you could add some rules to that. Like never two in a row, or only max two in a game (like challenge flags). Kinda of weird to me but the onside kick is such a rarity now.
