I never did any rust treatments on my truck and frame looked amazing at 160k miles when I sold it. They do use salt in winters so I don’t know what Ferd did to that frame, but it worked.

And that’s not even mentioning that it’s available in three trims, Ute pick up truck, family wagon, and large van/troop/passenger carrier.

The arguments I keep hearing on the Internet forums is that it’s not luxurious, which apparently is an absolute must if you sell a capable offer road vehicle in the US… for some reason. But I’m sure they could throw some leather on that bitch the way Jeep does with their Wranglers while they are some of the most unrefined, chattering, leaking, drafty vehicles that somehow still manage to sell, despite all that.

At this point, I’m not willing to buy any
argument that they can’t make that for the American market.

They claim safety and airbags, but the Australians somehow managed to get the Japanese to shove a bunch of airbags in them.

Luxury, just do the Jeep thing and put leather on a bunch of surfaces. Nobody will notice.

Diesel engine, just shove any Toyota gasoline engine in it.

I was briefly excited for the new Land Cruiser 250 until Toyota told me that I can only get it with a hybrid. I’m still looking into the new Lexus 250, but I’m becoming less and less excited about it.

I can't see many people taking $70k + truck offroad. How long will the Off Road pick up segment last? Overall truck sales are on the decline.

They gave people what they wanted. You couldn’t be the cool dad in a pick up truck anymore. They gave them a factory lifted super capable off-road vehicle with every single luxury and off-road feature checked. And obviously four doors for all those adventures with your 2.5 kids, dog, ATVs, 20 foot boat, and refugee tent. In today’s economy that means they will cost at least $70-80,000 and then by the time the dealers are done taking their cut, I promise you they will be selling for $100,000.

    My god.

    Now that should’ve been a 4G Tacoma!

Nobody in America wants a Ute bed.

Aftermarket companies are charging Americans tens of thousands of dollars to put a Ute bed on their pick up trucks.

These two statements can’t both be true.

I’d prefer an NA V6, but I’m okay with the turbo 4 if it is reliable. Not interested in a hybrid at all.

I also prefer analog gauges and no huge iPad popping up over the dash. Tone down the Decepticon design vibe. Lower starting prices across the board or at least make the package prices more reasonable.

I’m okay with rear drums, leaf springs and non-led headlights. I have zero interest in a blinged out halo truck with bouncy seats. I just want a basic BOF 4x4 truck.

If it is Toyota’s intention to move the Taco upmarket and make room for a unibody car with a rear utility bed, I’m not interested in that either.

I think we should just do away with the chicken tax. It is no benefit to Americans to have trucks built in Canada or Mexico, so we might as well start importing them again. And apparently somehow the Americans have figured out how to make affordable trucks in the US but Toyota can’t.

If they made a Tacoma with a 2000lb. payload it would have to have much stiffer springs and would ride like a log wagon when empty. People would hate it. You have to remember, most people use their Tacoma like a car 98% of the time and for light hauling towing the rest.

Serious s off-roaders and Overlanders (I hate that term) who plan on adding a bunch of weight can and do add stiffer springs to compensate for the increased loads. They are typically adding a whole new suspension at the same time that best suits their use case anyways.

I am trying to hold my judgement till I see a 4th Gen myself and drive it myself. However, from outside looking in, looks like Toyota is marketing toward the ex Civic, WRX, VW, Bro Insta crowd, which is sad. Not a little work truck like it used to be, but obviously I am not the target buyer. I love my 2017, but most likely my last Tacoma. 50k+ for a insta-pic 4-banger :der:

I think the twins win this round, but we will see.

Am I the only one who misses the old man truck?

Toyota up until the 4G taco, the previous generation Colorado and Ranger were always refuges for the old man truck crowd where you could buy something with a cloth interior for not a lot of money that you can use for hauling shit and not making a statement about your awesome lifestyle.

    You aren’t alone.

I would say Toyota is fucking up, but look at the TM stock price today, with earnings in a couple of hours.

Same. Sadly, that’s not enough in our social media, image obsessed culture anymore.

I’m curious why Toyota does not consider me part of their ideal customer base when I have bought over a dozen of them for myself and my immediate family, including two old man Tacos.
