Hello I’m looking at buying this 2010 double cab it is not the worse but it’s not the best, the frame is started to delaminate. The frame overall is very solid just the delimitation Is my only concern. With this type of rot how long would you say the truck would last if I just por 15 it. Or how much would it cost to replace the lower section of the C channel frame? Is this alright for the salt belt? Or should I just wait and find a truck from the south.

I would walk. It looks like they missed the frame replacement and they're trying to hide it with the under body treatment. Suspect areas are near the CATs where the frame turns upwards toward the engine, the boxed areas. Light taps with a ball peen will flake the metal off to give you a better picture of what you'll be dealing with. Any holes would be an immediate negative for me. If you aren't willing to do a complete frame off resto on this truck, I would walk and find another truck. You could try to needle scale the frame, acid treat the rust then etch and prep with POR15. It'll be a long week under the truck depending on your schedule, skill, and age but if it were me, I'd walk.

    Pass.

The entire underbody of that truck probably looks like that and they are trying to cover it up.

Honestly the underside of the rockers and body concerns me way more than the frame.

Looks like someone did some sort of shitty rubberized undercoating which is why parts look good and other parts have that 'dry' looking rust forming. Yet another example of why that shit shouldn't be used.

I'm a big fan of POR-15 but once you start getting rust in "sheets", POR-15 won't fix it. It will only protect the surfaces which have been properly prepped but the in-between sheets will keep on rusting and crumbling.

Another vote for walk away from it.

If you were looking at this truck last summer you may have had time to take advantage of the frame replacement recall.

the truck looks done. Anything that is rusted. Which by the pics is more than just the frame.

there’s other 4x4’s that don’t look like that.

pay x amount of money for what. It to break in half while driving?

did they spray rubber to try and hide this?
Or instead of actual protective coating they just slapped a little bit of rubber on one part

If it was just the frame (which it’s not) I’m not sure what kind of job even that would be. Just getting another frame alone before even messing with it at all is like $4-5k+ alone.

according to reviews there is numerous bad things about 4th gen. Fake travel, hitch now welded on, etc

but one claimed improvement (that they’ve been doing on other models) is changing to a straight boxed frame, rather than c channel riveted layers of metal that end up having issues.

Probably cheaper and faster to get another vehicle without the issue, than to find a spare frame to mess with on a bench.

Yes there are repair kits. Link kits. Etc. But idk if it deals with riveted layers and results in an entirely boxed single layer.
Plus, while anyone can weld a plate, frame manufacturers are supposed to dip the entire frame in a coating that covers inside as well; kind of hard to DIY.

Walk. You can replace a lot of parts on these trucks to keep/make them last longer.
A rusted frame like that is game over.
