LED bulb in halogen headlight = not DOT approved and won’t actually deliver more light based on the reflector/optics of the headlight and a light distribution of the LED bulb not matching that of a halogen. Also the distribution of the light in general won’t be where it is needed and could be BLINDING to on coming traffic.

fog lights, although not needing to be DOT approved, could cause the same issues but not as drastic.

    just don’t do it.

You can’t put LED bulbs in the headlight sockets. Blinkers and marker lights is fine. But the headlamp reflectors are not designed for LED.

Pretty sure folks either put higher watts with a stronger harness

or brighter Philips of some kind that aren’t higher watts therefore not requiring a better harness

vehicles that come with LED have LED projectors designed to be LED

not LED bulbs shoved into a halogen housing
Not to mention any potential hyper flash or bulb out warnings due to vehicles being designed to monitor normal use power draw.

which if adding resistors would defeat the point of efficiency and heat reduction.

It’s really just time that everyone understands optics and lighting in general. Do not put a PAR30 narrow beam light bulb in a screw base in your closet if you’re trying to get more light to look for your clothes. Defeats the purpose.

If you want that upgrade get complete fixtures and lamps made to use with them.

Just yesterday I was blinded by some schmuck in a Dodge Ram who bought the brightest LEDs he could find and popped them in without thinking about the consequences.

It's better to leave it up so when others search for this topic, they quickly see that it's a terrible and dumb idea to put Amazon LEDs into the stock halogen housings.

When they're in good condition, i.e. not fogged (tired of polishing mine, I need to just buy new lights but Jesus, Toyota thinks they're made of gold ), the factory headlights are pretty darn good, especially when paired with properly adjusted fog/driving lights. I absolutely hate plastic lights and the expense involved in replacing them, nothing like being able to replace the H4 light with some quality fixture for <$40/each like on my 1st gen Tacoma, but I will concede there are benefits to the newer style. There are some decent aftermarket retrofit lights that work well, but they're pricey to do it right.

And just something to think about coming from a paramedic who's run a lot of wrecks over the years, just because you can see better doesn't mean you're necessarily safer. As TacoEngineer41 pointed out, if you are blinding on-coming traffic then you have a couple thousand pounds of semi-guided projectile speeding towards you. The bluer light (higher K) that a lot of douchebags like to run is particularly harsh on older drivers; as we age our night vision starts going, it's a natural part of aging, but the bluer lights and those that don't have proper cutoff or too much spill can really play havoc with them. As vehicles get more expensive insurance companies look for every way they can to get out of paying claims. And before someone mentions it, yes, 1st responders need to use the night time mode on their flashers as well. Cops tend to be particularly bad about this and no matter how many times you try to explain to them that they've not actually safer with their strobes on the "retina scorch"/daytime setting, and to put their reflective vest on like the DOT says, they often won't listen.

The linked thread on improving lighting has been a very good reference for folks since it was posted and as it's been updated.
