My understanding is that its a "ply rating" and we no longer - in any tires, sidewall, tread or otherwise - use actual number of plies when it comes to load ratings. Manufacturers may state the number of plies but this is just info and not at all related to ply rating. https://www.lesschwab.com/article/tires/tire-ply-ratings.html

It's not a surprise that "generally" E rated tires are more durable than non E rated tires. And, if you have lots of experience offroading, especially if this is multiple decades of experience, then that correlation is even stronger. My point is that with more modern tires this is not a fool proof method of tire shopping and that you're likely missing out on some good options if you're limiting yourself only to E rated tires. There are going to be some non-E-rated models which are actually more durable than some E rated. Basically newer tech and newer materials have made it possible to create stronger, more durable tires with fewer layers. So comparing the plies of today with the plies of yesterday is like apples to oranges.

I lined up with the yellow valve stem marker and just added the beads. I’ve never thought about the bigger beads? I haven’t gone below 15 psi without bead locks.

Just put a set of these on my truck, so far so good. Way quieter than the duratracs.

Did you ever get more pictures of your truck with the new LT255/85/16 AT4Ws mounted? I also wanted to ask you about the weight. Do you feel that they are too heavy for the Tacoma? I'm having second thoughts about these because of the weight. I have a 4.0 MT so I may be ok, but I'm kind of worried about the weight. Thanks!

It's been raining/flooding here so I've been driving my truck (instead of my lowered daily driver). So far my 255/85R16 have been great in the rain. But, the rain also means I haven't had time to take more pics or measurements or anything. They look good, but I gotta admit I kinda miss how aggressive the G003's looked. But I do not miss the road noise and rough ride. Not sure if I can feel the extra weight yet, I've had nearly 800lbs in the bed so that's kinda making it hard to tell. But just got that shit outta there so can now really start to pay attention to how the new tires feel. Also gonna be a little while until I get a tank or two of gas thru it so I can see about mpg. Planning a short trip out to the desert in a month so that'll be my first time to test them offroad.

They look fine, like any other A/T pretty much. Those G003s are sick though. I think the Ridge Grapplers are a good-looking tire also.

Are you on stock gears still? I was considering going with the 255/85r16's but ordered 265/75r16 instead since it's my daily driver and I don't want any driveability issues with the AT transmission or using OD on the highway.

And have you had any rubbing issues with this size? I've got the same wheels.

Yeah, stock gears. TONS and TONS of people are running 33's on stock gears. Most are running the slightly smaller 285's but also plenty that run the larger 255's. So far this hasn't been a problem for me. I had 265/75R16 prior to stepping up to a skinny 33" and I didn't notice any difference in drivability in terms of gearing. To me this truck is slow and guzzles gas regardless of tire size or weight, lol. But I've also never driven it stock form since the prior owner had 285's on it when I bough it.

Stock gearing probably isn't ideal but it seems 33's are still OK. I'd love to drive a truck that was regeared specifically for 33's to see how it drives. Regearing is quite an expense so as much as I'd love to do so in order to have a "perfect" setup I'm gonna stick with "fine" for now. If someone can prove to me that I'll see a big increase in mpg and that it'd drastically improve how it drives, then I'd surely start saving for a regear.

I can't really speak to rubbing, unfortunately. My truck already had the bumper and mudflaps clearanced by the prior owner for his 285's and low offset wheels. When I installed my 255 G003's I had a tiny bit of rub so took the mudflaps off and clearanced the fender liner a tiny bit with a heat gun. But that rubbing was minor and will vary a lot on your specific suspension and alignment settings. No new rubbing now that I've got the AT4W's installed.

I'm not entirely sure what the exact measurement is since I bought my truck with a lift on it already and then have went thru a few different setups already and have some weight from skids/sliders. But... best I can tell it's ~2.25" front and rear.

Front = TRD Pro Bilstein coilovers (6112) + Toytec Baja spacer
Rear = TRD Pro Bilstein shocks (5160) 3rd gen leaf pack + Headstrong AAL (w/ overload left in)
(I plan to replace the AAL with an Icon RXT leaf pack set to stage 2 soon. Hoping for the same amount of lift but with better performance.)

I'm looking at getting a set of these to use in the winter for ski season. I'll be driving 2-3 hours with decent HWY/FWY speeds combined with snow, slush, ice on the way up and down the mountain roads. Any guesses on which one would and get better MPG's?

    255/85r16 C Rated 58.4 lbs
    285/70r17 SL Rated 53.4 lbs

What affects MPG more? Width? Weight? Load rating?

I am by no means an expert, but from what I have read and understand the narrower tire will cut the slushy snow easier and get in contact with the pavement. Wider tires will “float” easier. As far as mpg’s are concerned, you need to consider the weight of your wheels as well. The combined weight is what the truck needs to turn. I have tried a combined 85 pound wheel/tire package on a stock ‘19 TRD OR in central Indiana and my truck would gear hunt on the slightest of grade increases. Installation of an Anderson Engineering manifold spacer plus the KDMax-Pro tune have done wonders for performance. I’m getting the 255/85/16’s installed on Toyota 16” beadlock style wheels (23.5#) next week. I’ll post a review after driving on them a bit.

That makes alot of sense. The total weight would probably be even Steven. The 16’s I have are 19lbs and the 17’s are 25lbs. Helpful to hear about the width difference in snow on pavement. I’ll have to look up more info on that.
