You shouldn't use 86 or 85 grade gas, right?

Just saw the grade, ouch, if I understand correctly, turbo-charged engine need exact octane rating or more, regardless of altitude, so he really should have put in the next available, which is 88

I'm sure a bit of timing is being pulled running 85, but I doubt any damage will be done. Especially with cooler temps and not towing.

People out west use 85 octane with turbos all the time and I've never heard of widespread issues. That being said I always ran at least 87 (usually 91) with my turbos when I lived in Colorado.

Edit: Also it's embarrassing imo for Andre to be putting 85 in that Tacoma. It's supposedly an enthusiast channel where they should know better and shouldn't TFL be footing the gas bill anyhow?

This is just one of the challenges for making turbocharged engines for the general public, they’re just gonna put whatever trash they can find into the engine. If the minimum recommended octane rating is 87, I don’t think that you can use the 85 high elevation exemption you would with a naturally aspirated engine.

What ever is stated to be used is what should be used. Higher octane for turbo engines and less for NA, typically. You will hurt a turbo engine rated for higher octane when using lower octane. You are just wasting money using higher octane in a low octane rated NA engine.

So ideally in minimum is 87 and it is not available they should be using the next higher up. Now being I have never towed with a turbo engine.....I will going with a higher octane help with MPGs while towing?

You probably shouldn’t use 85. It also probably won’t hurt anything but power output if you accidentally fill a tank or two with it

Not unless it's recommended to use higher octane when towing. Just use what the manufacturer states to use.

That’s only for engines that don’t use forced induction.

It's not just about losing HP or gaining HP, it's about what octane the engine needs to combust in turbo vs NA.

It likely won’t hurt a modern low boost production engine either. It’ll pull timing and everything will be fine. I wouldn’t regularly run 85, but I doubt any damage will be done
