I guess I'm getting old. I've hooked up many u car/truck radio's. This new stuff looks easy until you start thinking the sr is not able to hook up an updated radio?
Help me if you can, because I'm truly Lost here Thanks in advance!

You might get more help if you include more specifics, as to what your goal is. “Hooking up an updated radio” is pretty generic.
Are you looking for a more modern aftermarket? Are you hoping to buy a later model OE with more modern tech? Etc

Ok sorry I'm not good at this. I like getting text messages read to me. I'd like to use my cell phone wifi to have GPS on the radio, and o yea I'd like to watch YouTube/movies when I have down time. The one I have now is touch screen, no web, no gps. It is voice activated for phone calls.
    O And I'm cheap!!!
But would rather spend good $$$ on something that is for long term..
    I hope that helps.

it sounds like you would have to go aftermarket or get one of the devices that mirrors your phone. Sorry, these are out of my element.
There is an audio/video sub forum here, some of the folks that frequent there may be more help, or there may already be threads discussing.

Yeah, car stereos are now head units. There’s a little more wiring involved, depending on your trucks options.
You say you’re cheap but check Trail Grid Pro out. They’ll pre-wire your radio for your specific model, which makes it simple plug and play. I just bought one of their Sony units to gain Car Play and am very happy with my purchase.
This model seems their cheapest option.

I don't know many that will allow you to watch movies with your phone but I think that's a secondary add on to radios. (It may not be legal) most higher end radios will do what you want otherwise. I installed an "updated radio" on my SR so it can be done.

its been a while but it was a Kenwood DMX905 they have newer models now. If you do a search under my post you will find my install and how i handled the stereo microphone since it doesnt use the same mic built into the headliner.

Also just a heads up check out the features. My kenwood does not come with a radio scan feature which i thought was insane.

With my Sony head unit I was able to mount the Sony mic in the factory location. I thought that was a big plus. Trail Grid Pro sold the mounting bracket designed for the Sony mic.

Ok I'm looking at a sony av receiver multimedia XAV-AX150, new still in the box. I'm sure that's not all I'll pay. So where do I get the plugs for a 2018 tacoma??

Crutchfield can make the wiring harness. Not sure if you need to buy the head unit from them or not.
