Based on what I saw in most other tests, they seem fine. There are at least 3 others that I found on this site... it's the first one that is really the "issue" IMO.

I'm being the expensive ginnie pig I guess. 151,000 miles oil changes every 10k on the dot with full synthetic. I'm using AMS Oil and filters. So far so good. Also, I have not developed a timing cover leak. We will see how long it lasts.

Change your pcv valve before it sticks and creates a leak

Would changing your oil yourself at 5k since the dealer won't until 10k cause any issues with the free 2 year Toyota maintenance? Would you reset the vehicle to reflect this or just let them think they are doing it all?
I was talking to salesman that comes to my job. His 2011 Camry just turned 400K! I asked about his oil change routine he said since day one it's been every 10K.

He's saying if it sticks, you can build pressure in the crankcase and that can promote leaks. Nothing to do with a catch can.

thanks for clarifying that for me.
Had a valve cover leak, replaced gasket. Few months later the right side was leaking…..replaced gasket. Then someone mentioned the pcv valve. It was stuck, 142k miles on the last truck, gen 2

No it shouldn't, it just won't be on record. I did my first oil change at 10k then let the dealer do the second and they asked me why didn't I bring my truck in for the free oil change, I lied and told him I didn't have time to come in so I did it myself. Honestly I just didn't trust them.

You can add any service you do on the Toyota owners website and it will become part of the record for your truck.

First change, always at 1000 miles or a bit less. Smaller air cooled engines, 10 hours. It's amazing how much stuff and break in microscopic metal from parts seating can get into the oil.

My dealership did mine at 5k and 10K (well 9,400) all for free.

Look I know there may be good science that supports 10K intervals. I've even seen some science support 15K intervals.
Yeah, but.... If you are wrong, what are you risking?

Oil use to be changed at 3K because that was about as much as you could get out of the oil of the day. One of the biggest issues with oil use to be the PH. Oil, as it absorbs hydrocarbons from combustion would turn slightly acidic on the PH scale. Even if the lubricity, viscosity, antiseize and antiwear agents were still in the oil, it was ever so slightly pitting your wear surfaces in the engine. Around 1980 a lot of the research from the Gas Crunch of the 1970's started to pay off. We got better engines with better metallurgy and better tolerances for efficiency and less contamination of oil. Then we got better oil and by 1990, most of your premium oils were 5K oils. Now almost all oil is a 5k oil (DON'T GET THAT DOLLAR TREE OIL).

After 5K there are so many variables that start to make it a "your mileage may vary" scenario.
If you drive 10K miles - all flat, unloaded, in weather that is consistently between 50 and 70 degrees, dry, at speeds not to exceed about 55mph, for periods of 30 minutes each time, and like a grandpa you get one set of results.
If you drive it 10k - in the hills and mountains, loaded with gear, sometimes with a trailer, oversized off road tires, in the extreme heat or the extreme cold, when there is a lot of humidity, make short runs to the grocery store at 85mph and drive it like this is GTA, then you will get totally different results.

Most of those differences may be noticeable in an oil sample test at the 5k mark, but from 5k to 10k is when the differences really start to separate and you get wildly different results. IMHO - after 5K you are gambling. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. If you win, then you saved $100 on an oil change. If you lose, you lost $8,000 on an engine replacement. That means for the 10K oil change to pay off you have to take your truck to 800,000 miles before replacing the engine for it to break even. And the occasional $100 spread out over time is easier to absorb than an all of the sudden you need to crap out $8,000 for a new engine.

You're welcome to your opinion, but it's an opinion. I've never heard of any engine failure related to the use of an oil within the specification and OCI listed in the manual. I've never seen a UOA suggesting this was an issue either.

Hey - as long as you are paying for the truck and the oil, I'm not telling you how to run it or what to put in it. You do you and I'ma do me, aight? My truck gets 5K changes and that's not an opinion - it's a fact and damn near a law at this house. I'll see you in 800,000 miles.

The fact that there's 2 specs from the factory says one interval doesn't fit all. Vehicle use plays a big part.

good summary. I was in the 3 camp with a 302 and 390 ford and Dino oil in the 1980s. In 2011 I drove a new Town Car about 40 k miles in a year and used full synthetics and quality filters. 5k was getting expensive so I started using Blackstone . They said 15k was ok but that was tough for me so I ran it about 9k. The fancy amsoil filters didn’t affect dirt so I switched to motorcaft bought in bulk. Also started sourcing oil from wall mart. The cost benefit and UOA made sense.

the Tacoma sees more city driving and harder use so I will shorten the interval and use premium oil and either factory or wix filters.

the first oil change, or two , early, just make logical sense even though it will be hard to prove.

If you're not tasting your own oil, are you even changing your own oil?
