    Hello all,
Long time listener, first time caller.
I had a rattle show up from the back and found this broken shock. At first, I was worried that the shock mount gave out, but on further inspection it appears that the top of the shock shaft broke on compression and it allowed it to punch up through the bed. These shocks were replaced about five years ago with an aftermarket set. I don't do off-roading. Mostly highway driving and occasional trailer hauling.

My question is, is it as it appears that it is just the shock failure and the mount is OK?

Secondly what replacement shocks do you recommend for street driving and some semi-light trailer hauling? I have a 14' aluminum boat on an EZ-loader and a small 5' trailer for dirt, bark, gravel etc.

    Thanks.

Search marketplace for new 3rd gen take off Bilsteins, they yellow ones with the blue boots. You should be fine, bolt on a new shock and now you have an extra drain hole in the bed.

Great advice. I found a set of OEMs from a 2022 TRD off-road. Are these interchangeable with a 2008 SR5? He also has the fronts. Do you know if I can do a direct swap without clearance problems or bracket mods on the front or rear?
I did read some other posts, but did not find that information.

    Drain hole... quite funny :).

Could be, looks like the top nut broke off.

well, the shock broke for some reason
whether force, or the nut came off
either way doesn't matter, it's done. Needs replaced.

Only other damage I'm seeing is a hole poked through the plastic bed, which can be patched up if you plan on sleeping in there ever and don't want cold air sneaking in through that hole.

if you want shitty shocks yeah those are fine

    otherwise look at better

Yes they should swap right in, however you may gain 1" of lift up front unless you swap your coils to the new front shocks. 1" isn't that much lift and shouldn't require other mods but it may change how your truck sits from a leveling standpoint.

Rear top mount looks A-OK on the chassis. By the look of the failure, seems the top shock nut and threads on the shock rod went bye bye. That can happen after 5 years, probably corroded away and jumped ship.

Not sure how they’re shitty. For a strictly on road stock truck they should work great for his needs. Lifting it or heavier hauling etc there may be better options.

Yes everything will bolt up, it may raise the front .5-1” if you’re using the 3rd gen coil springs. I’m running this setup on my 09.

Thanks, I appreciate the further notes. Turns out the old shock is a Bilstein 5100. I was checking Amazon and there was a review there with pictures of someone with the same exact failure. Weird.
