Did you ever find a bike you wanna buy? I know that last Ninja fell through because they were asking way too much.

i'd prob hold onto it until you got what you wanted or close to it, up until the point you find a good deal on a bike you want, then i'd be more willing to take a lower number.

just a couple of things tbh
so the ninja i was looking at was on copart a totaled one. ya i did want it but i backed out when they put a reserve of 1500 on a totaled bike that was gonna cost me about 1500 to get up and going on the road again... which doesnt make sense on a bike that cost 5400 new on the low end with abs. atm im waiting until a ninja 500 40th anniverseray editon i emailed a dealer asking about allocating one and they said its gonna be a good few months before they even get a base model one... so i got some time.

They can look at the (vehicle descriptor) specifically the 8th digit of the vin and it will tell them if the model was DOT certified for road use which includes emissions for that year if there was any. Like you said some states don't care. Here they passed a law that if the motorcycle's not designed for use on the highway you can no longer convert it. California is even worse, putting dirt bikes into classes based on engine emissions and stickering them. We discuss this on another bike forum with dirtbike guys from all over and obviously it's easy in some places, impossible in others and in more than one state they've pulled some of the tags.

Interesting, i didn't know the vin had indicators as well but makes sense.

That said, I would think it'd be pretty unlikely for a DMV worker to be paying attention to that enough to catch it. But it can certainly happen.

Lots of guys in CA will circumvent it entirely and plate in SD, NM, or AZ, but that really would only potentially save you the first time getting pulled over. After that the state likes to come down on you.

In 1990 were the A2 licenses in Europe a thing? Lots of the "500" bikes are wrangled it to keep them A2 compliant. It's a huge market. That's why the CB500X hasn't ever made more power in it's repeated updates.

Edit: that's a legit question because I do not know.

I live in WV currently and it can be done relatively easier here. Most people go through Montana or Ohio to tag their cars and dirtbikes now. I guess some other states are catching on :(

Registered for the Team Strange Grand Tour last night. Like I need another excuse to go riding. Started plotting the locations of racetracks around me.

Today kinda feels like Christmas morning. Wifey is gonna sign paperwork for an XT250 today! I’ve been telling her I wish she’d have something she could mob around with me while I’m on the KLX. Forest roads everywhere better watch out!

Many states don't care, in the ones that do actually pulling the tag is hit or miss. Here in NM its officially prohibited to tag a dirtbike but the DMV licenses 3rd parties for places like Quick DMVs and if you have an in with one it can be done but it's getting difficult. I've owned 3 tagged dirt bikes over the years preferring them to most of the street legal enduros that were being sold and only know of one tag here that was pulled when the owner (a riding buddy) renewed with the state DMV through the mail.

Personally I didn't want to spend allot of $ setting up another dirtbike for DS use and get caught in the same boat, one of mine had a south dakota tag (for the same reason) and it was still a hassle when the cops saw a local license and an out of state tag. I was able to talk my way out of those and got off with a couple warnings. Traffic violations had a negative impact on my employment back then (security clearance) so I eventually sold off my tagged XRR and 525 replaced them with a KTM500 which is 50 state legal, no more hassles. The 500s and 350s are popular around here because they're just about a tagged dirtbike anyway.

I was looking at the rules for those yesterday after you posted them. I don't think I could finish the racetrack but could have done the TEAM STRANGE 40 or whatever city/spelled one. Definitely not the separate state version though.

But, not committing myself to anything for this spring/summer, six or so weeks until the little one arrives and who knows how much seat time I'll be able to get after that.

Edit: small celebration for me today though, just finished my third out of ten classes for my online masters degree. Started in December and my goal is to finish 5 classes before kiddo arrives and the rest before she's able to crawl, ending by December of this year.

I wouldn't call it close to you, but I know you ride a lot. The track I posted in the photo thread is here "20 Island Rd, Great Meadows, NJ 07838". Island Dragway. It's pretty close to the PA border off of rt 46. You'll want to use a gps because there is only 1 small sign for it on rt 46. There is a pretty good hot dog stand named Johnny's about 10 miles closer to PA if you're into that.

NJ Motorsports park is a road course in south Jersey too
