I have seen several threads on here about this issue. My 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road wont start and it is throwing a Check Brake System error. I checked the battery. It was a bit over 12 v(dropped to about 11.5 when trying to start it up). Figured it needed a jump. Checked the voltage will it was hooked up to the jumper cables and it was about 13.5 v. That didn't help. I checked some fuses under the hood and inside the cabin but didn't find any blown. I just had the Park Neutral Switch replaced earlier in the week and it worked fine until today. I do notice the N on the shift column does not illuminate. I have tried starting it in neutral. I have tried using the super secret shift bypass button. Nada. I tried letting it roll back about 10 ft since I saw one thread where the parking brake was causing the issue and that seemed to fix it. Still the same issue. What specific fuses should I check? Admittedly I checked stuff like the IGN 1 and 2 and a few others so maybe a brake related fuse? Or could the Park Neutral switch need adjustment? Any help is appreciated.

Correct. it does not crank. It doesn't make the 'tick tick tick' noise I typically associate with a weak battery.

Also disconnected the battery for about a half an hour. Tried shorting the + and - cables together as I saw that worked on another thread.

I guess we should ask, Are you willing to test a few things.
We can check the relay terminals to see where we do and don't have power. Same wit the starter.

Or would it be better to have it towed to the place that "fixed it" last?

I'm will to help walk you through checking the system, if you choose to do that.

    It has a key.
Yes. I am able to test a few things. I am too old and my driveway is too cold for me to lay underneath it but I can toubleshoot things if I know what to look for> i am guessing this is an upright-check-this-and-that issue(aside from the interior fuse box). I replaced an AC clutch relay on it last year when my neighbor(the previous owner) kept getting a dead battery.

That is my suspicion since I do not see the N illuminate but I would like to eliminate as much of the troubleshooting as I can so I can have the garage fix it if they didn't align it properly. I understand there is an alignment tool which I am certain they did not use. The tech who worked on it was not happy doing the work.

LOL. That will be something I have done if I can't get it fixed this weekend. I will not be crawling under it to mess with aligning the switch.

Under the hood in the fuse box, there will be a relay labeled - ST Relay.
Pull the relay, and check Pins 1 and 5 for power with the key in the cranking position. (The truck will not crank with the relay out.)

Thanks. I will check that in the morning. Does ST relay stand for start relay?

I used a channel lock to pull the AC clutch relay but was concerned I would crush it. Is there a tool you use or should I put my big boy pants on and just go with it?

They make a tool, but I never used one.
I do just like you. Hope it doesn’t break.
I’ve not broken one yet :fingerscrossed:

Getting about 11.6 volts between pin 1 and pin 5. I swapped the FOG FR relay with the ST relay after verifying they are the same p/n. Same symptoms. Swapped relays back. I forgot to post that I tried my OBD code reader. 0 DTC.IMG_2430.jpg

Even if the battery is toast, jumping it should eliminate the battery as an issue, correct?

Each pin should have 12v (battery voltage)
DO NOT check between each pin.

Black lead to ground, Red lead to pin 5
