I'm cheap and was bothered by how much the blades cost & how short they lasted.

After shaving I would rinse with hot water and clean with an old tooth brush, remove as much water as possible and then put a drop of baby oil on the blade.

It seemed to extend the life of the blade a good amount for just a little extra work.

    Same.

However, once it reaches the base of my neck it starts looking like a squirrel infested hermit, no matter how I try to clean it.

Im over shaving, but just can’t deal with growing the hair out. After a few days it driving me crazy. Longest I ever let it go was a month. Guess it stopped bothering me. But at my new job I have to wear heavy collared work shirts. They rub my neck a lot and usually irate it bad when I don’t shave. So usually go about 3-4 days and shave again

Im sure that helps. Using the Gillette blades and the Gillette cream, those blades get caked with foam crap, and I make sure I wash them pretty good. Rinsing doesn’t really seems to get it off. Probably why they dull so fast for me

It seems I read somewhere that any water remaining on the blade will pit it on a microscopic level = rough shave. I figured the baby oil displaced the water. :notsure:

After I retired I grew my first beard ever and got my first electric to trim with.

Am I missing something or is wet shaving simply the shaving most of us do, where we lather up and apply shaving cream, and then, well, shave with a wet razor?

I’m not quite sure what a dry shave would be other than electric.

"A traditional wet shave uses a single bladed razor and can either be done with a straight razor or with a safety razor."

Ok. Well, not sure what the advantage (or difference) of a single blade razor is. Seems like a very specific name for not a very specific type of shaving

Advantages: 1)Price effective. Example 100 single blade razors will be about $20 whereas 5 blade cartridge refills $18 for 8 cartridges (via quick google search on the cartridges)
    2) Most shave soaps are made with natural ingredients such as being tallow based
    3) Kind of fun researching and trying different scents of soaps, etc

    Disadvantages: 1) There's a learning curve.
    2) It's kind of time consuming
    3) You CAN spend a shit ton of money trying out different products until you find the "right one" for you or just sampling stuff

Didn't create the thread to sway anyone into trying it by any means. Like I mention in the first post, I'm part of a reddit community that is dedicated to this sort of thing. Being I"m also a Tacoma enthusiast I thought I'd say if there is a spot for something like this here.

    Do you buddy.

    4 run, 2 don't
My basic setup that works perfect since retiring IE no more professional look

    20240209_190325.jpg

Comb and brush to prevent tangling and keep it nice and tidy

Scissors for cutting those stragglers that hang down low or outwards; great for trimming those singular hairs too that extend passed the upper lip

Trimmer to clean up the cheek and neckline

Shaver for clean-up as it's as good as it gets to being smooth without the use of a razor

I used to get a large pack of disposable blades. It seemed that each time I needed a replacement, there was a new style of handle, and I didn't know if my old one would fit the new blades. When they came up with that battery operated one, I bailed.

Once you do wet shaving, especially with a straight razor, there is no going back to the inferior way
