Just curious. I had a very small rock chip and it's been getting really cold out. The whole windshield cracked along the bottom. I just can't see where that little chip could cause the whole thing to fracture. I've had chips in all my windshields. Anyone else have their windshield crack along the bottom?

all those chips are different. You need to get them repaired as quickly as possible. If it is less than a 6" crack, most places say they can stop it from spreading.

The chip spreads by having water expand and contract inside the chip. You start out with a little liquid water in there, but when that freezes, it expands and starts the crack spreading.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The chip causes micro fissures in the tempered glass which in turn comprimises the structural integrity of the safety glass. That is very common with chipped windsheilds and weather changes. Your defroster is what probably caused the crack to migrate.

My windshield had a small rock hit it this summer and it spread to at least 8 inches before I notcied it the next day. now it's cracked along the half the windshield. Most of the growing is from the defroster during cold mornings.

so far its all good, my insurance deductible for a new windshield is only 50 bucks but I think i will wait until it gets bad. my luck i would put in a new one then instantly get hit again.

There was some issue with our windshields spontaneously cracking and I think they were covered under warranty if there was no chip in the windshield. I think this was only in the 2005 Tacomas though.

whether I make 2 claims for windshields or 2 claims for wrecks, I think that my insurance will go up. That's why I normally give the glass guy $20 and leave it at that.

broken windshield will be a comp claim, which will not increase your rates. Only collision claims count against you. (in cali anyway)

I had a chip "fixed" professionally in Aug 2007, it was a center hit.
Two days ago, I heard a loud "snap" and the fixed chip cracked all the way across. It looks like a sockmonkey mountain range! :D Anywho, pulld the paperwork from the "fix" & only warrantied for 90 days. :(

It sometimes fun to watch it meet the other "chips", I have had that happen on more than one occasion, on my tundra. Really don't want to fix it till after winter since all the rock salt & sand pegs the windshield. Its low enough so its not in my field of vision and the trucks inspection is up to date till Dec 09.

The biggest culprit is water/dirt and the temp changes expanding and contracting in the chip. I'm somewhat irritated about the chip fix but will talk to Windshield place after the holidays. Too damn busy now!

I think this might have cracked it to. To much defrost heat and the top still cold. Probably created some presure.

I got one within a few months of new right above the black section at the bottom passenger side. Had it professionally fixed for $40, I did not want to change out the windshield so early on. That was like 8 months ago and it has not grown any,"yet". Fingers crossed.........:)

I had a crack appear on a car I used to have. It was travelling horizontally across the top of the windshield. I was able to apply some pressure with my fingers to move it toward the top edge so it wouldn't spread further.
