3rd Gen till the wheels fall off. 4th Gen is hideous

I really want to believe manufacturers do this. I don't know about Toyota, but I'm a recovering Ford owner, and I can tell you they failed to do this well enough for me. At the very least, wait a few years so that the problems become well-known problems, and you can better know what you're getting into.

I hear what you're saying and I've seen you defend the third gen V6, particularly against the second gen owners out to criticize it. I appreciate you doing that because people make way, way more of the issue on this board than is necessary. However, even if it's not as big of a problem as this board makes it out to be, the third gen is a high revving engine. Our family car is a Ford Expedition with the V6 Ecoboost. It handles hills and gets to speed much quicker than my Tacoma.

Does the issue bother me? A bit, but I also appreciate that the V6 is fairly proven and likely to be very reliable in the long run. So when I bought my truck, I bought it knowing I was making that tradeoff. And given how much people DO complain about this, it stands to reason they'll appreciate the lower end torque of the new 2024s.

Of course, but the 2023 has nothing compared to the 2024 in terms of new technology.

I'm in a different situation. My 07 is closing in on 250,000 miles. I have never been impressed with the 3rd gens, mainly because of the engine. I purposely waited for something better.

But I'm interested in the new 4 cyl turbo Toyota is going to put in their new Tacoma. I have driven a Ranger with their 2.3L turbo and own a 2020 Explorer and that engine blows Tacoma out of the water. Tows a lot more and gets significantly better fuel mileage to boot.

If Toyota can do the same and do it reliably, I'll buy a 4th gen. But I'm going to wait. I'll be making a decision sometime in late 2024 or early 2025. I will seriously consider Ranger if Toyota doesn't come through.

And FWIW, I'd have never bought a 2023 knowing the 2024's were coming. But if I did, I'd have to keep it. My thoughts are a minimum of 5 years and IME somewhere around 10 years or 150,000 miles is usually a good place to trade.

Also, anytime a new model is released the 1st ones are high end trim and never discounted off sticker. Later, there will be some cheaper versions available with better deals.

EB v6s are absolute beasts! Very good power and good gas mileage. You wouldn’t see me owning one though:)

Yeah I do like to defend the beloved minivan/Camry/car engine because I see nothing wrong with it. Well, gas mileage could be a bit better but it’s a truck that is shaped like a brick. And yes, some 2nd Genner folks are quite annoying about it, not sure what their deal is.

3.5 has got adequate low end, great mid and awesome high end for passing on the highway. I tow heavy at times, go off-road loaded over payload and she does it no problems.

I recently moved up north and drove for 10.5 hours through mountain passes. I miscalculated and overloaded my poor single axle trailer by at least 500-1000… You can see how there is absolutely no space between tire and wheel well, also tires are squished even though they were at max 50PSI. Never again will I do this. My truck was also over payload.

I’m lifted 2”, on 33s, sliders, winch, front bumper and roof rack. Here is pics of me climbing long steep hills while fighting headwinds:

    IMG_1330.jpg

About 3400 RPMs and ~1/4 throttle. Not even close to 4600 RPMs that so many guys say is needed to get “peak torque” Gas mileage was trash as expected.

Here I’m climbing a hill unladen. Like 2.5K RPMs. This is why I don’t understand this “lack of low end” complaint. :)

Like what’s happening at the rear bedsides? They tried way too hard. I was excited for the 4th Gen because I’m a Toyota fan but honestly I’m disappointed in so many ways.

My ex had a 2015 escape with like 10k miles. Well, the coolant got into the oil and the engine needed replacing. I have zero faith in ecoboost engines. Older Ferds were cool though.

don't forget, the 'dent' or intersection of all the creases at the top front corner of the front door under the mirror.

all i can think whenever i see the 4th gen is this regular car review. except instead of 'TRIANGLES', it's all 'ANGLES'!!!!!11!1!!1

Disappointed to say the least. They tried way too hard. So bad. IMO they lost the body style. I definitely will go check them out that being said I’ll stand back and always love my TurdGen

They increased power sure, but it’s not like it was a problem with the 3.5. Some people just need to set their expectations right. I was expecting way better MPGs too. Payload is still pathetic. All this talk about “new and improved” Tacoma and I honestly do not really see it.

Wtf are those seats in the PRO? Are we in an arcade racing game? Haha.

what about it is desirable? i mean it looks slightly better, but functions the same. still a tiny opening in a large slab of glass.

what i'd love is the tundra full-retractable rear glass.

I would love to test drive 4G MT Tacoma but that’s as far as I’ll go.

I think after that I would appreciate my ancient 3G that rides like a dump truck even more.:)

I wonder how much that rear tailight would be. :)

I’ve cracked both my tail lights. Found some used taillights for 180$ on FB marketplace.
