I went into the dealer today to purchase a Tacoma DCab Prerunner with the TRD offroad package, but left because they were trying to charge me 2% holdback and a 1% PIO Holdback (Port installed option). I was under the impression that holdback was a payment that the manufacturer gave to the dealer to help offset the cost of them purchasing the vehicle while it sat on the dealer's lot. I've had two Toyota dealers (one in Baton Rouge, LA and another in Austin, TX) try and charge me the holdback. Is this standard or are they just trying to gouge more money outta me?

    Thanks,

I think they're trying to make money out of you. Have you asked them is this pretty much standard in that particular area. I'm from fla. and i have never heard of that when I purchased my truck.

Well, I've gone to a few more dealers in the Austin area and it appears they all include the above fees. I still can't get over the 2% holdback that they charge to the customer. Oh well, as long as its near the invoice price, I guess I shouldn't complain.:)

Holdback isn't something the consumers are supposed to know about...

But if you do know about it, that's another bargaining point on YOUR behalf.

    NOT THEIRS!!

I'd tell them to go pound sand. :D

Toyota tried this little "holdback" dance with my wife and I.

Since my wife is an accountant, we decided to try something different. Our financial service provider has a car buying service. Our local Toyota dealer was offering a "meet or beat any price" sale at the time. We priced the exact truck we wanted, options and all, using the buying service's website (which is basically all options at dealer cost and vehicle itself at $500 over factory invoice).

My wife created a spreadsheet itemizing everything, and we brought it in to Toyota.

We said, "if you will sell us this truck for this price, we will buy it right now - no "selling" required on your part." They tried the, "oh, well, your figures don't include labor for the accessory installation - we are required by Toyota to include holdback, etc." We said, "thanks for your time, I guess we'll use our buying service and go to one of your competitors." Of course, at the end of the day, they were able to "do us a favor" and waive the holdback and agreed to our offer.

Just stick to your guns - if you were trying to buy a Prius, that's one thing, but trucks are not the easiest thing for them to sell in this economy!

Just skip the BS and conduct your transaction on line. Query several dealers on the same model with same options. Make sure their offers are sent to you with the "out the door price." then play them against one another-on line. Don't set foot in the dealer until you are ready to purchase with the e-mail(s) in hand. You wil get gthe best deal minus aggrevation this way. Ideally, you will have your own financing os they can't pull a fast one on you. BTW, edmunds also has a buying service...

Don't pay over factory invoice. The dealer does notpay factory invoice. Essentially that is the holdback. You should pay anywhere from $200-600 under the factory invoice.

Never go to a dealer early or middle of the month. Always buy a car on the last day of the month.

I have quotes from 2 dealers, one emailed their copy of the invoice & will sell for $500 over invoice. This includes the hold backs. The other dealer just gave me a price no invoice was emailed. Both are close in price. I did price the truck w/other web site & they are all about the same price. No web site mentioned anything about hold back. So it appears the hold back is figured into the invoice price on other web sites including edmunds. I'd love to find out otherwise. I hope to buy soon.

You can do better. Don't be in a rush, and January 31st you'll do better than on Jan 30th.

The way things are with vehicles sales,it really doesn't matter what day of the month you buy.
