Crack in airbox

I was checking the oil tonight and found a small crack in the airbox where the clamp closes.

Looks like the crack is before the filter, so I think air is still being filtered.

What do you guys think, still ok to drive this way? (since I probably have been for a while).

The crack is before the air passes the filter, so its fine to drive on. To be honest, you could probably drive this another 200k miles with a slight dip in mileage and a probably unnoticeable increase in intake sound. Just make sure the airbox makes a firm seal around the filter.

 

nope trucks totaled. best i can do is $12 and the top half of a whopper

 

Yank it and rough it up inside and fiberglass patch the inside or try to find a replacement one.

 

Thanks for the helpful feedback from most. I figured it was on the other side of the filter and was ok, just wanted further validation.

One more thing I didn’t notice when I bought the truck, but so it goes sometimes buying used.

I’ll see if I can find a good price on one online or from the salvage yard, if not, I’ll try to patch it.

I bought one of these for my truck, perfect fit, works, would highly recommend. There are numerous ebayers selling this so check around for price and location.

The previous owner of my truck used a K&N and I didn't like the extra noise in the cab. So I cobbled together an OEM air system by buying the airbox on ebay and buying the intake resonator tube direct from toyota for $111. A complete OEM intake system from toyota is $600+. Rip off. Shop smart.

Alternatively like an above-poster mentioned you can just JB weld it.

 

Thanks for the link. I was actually just contemplating whether OEM was important for this type of part, and I was leaning towards not…just a plastic box basically.

I think a tech at the dealership probably forced it and broke it since it’s right and the point where the clip pulls it tight.

 

Considering it's on the intake side of the filter, I would do the opposite. Patch first, then, if your patch really bothers you, take your time to find a replacement.

But either way, there's no need to rush out to do anything about it right away, just one of those things that ought to be done.

Thanks for the feedback, that’s the way I am starting to lean. Even the used ones on EBay are going for about 200 bucks.

Use a bit of acetone to clean the crack and the area around it and be generous with the glue when applying. It will seal the crack right up.

 

Yeah, Taco’s can do that to you. Try gas-x.

These airboxes can be found at scrapyard for next to nothing…….

 

Totaled. Post the part out ASAP.
