ChrisFix on YouTube added a toggle switch in the EFI circuit and located the switch inside the shifter boot. It's pretty well hidden unless you're among the million+ viewers who have seen the video. Not a defense against tow truck though.

 

Prevention is just that, to prevent someone from driving it away by altering the start sequence.

If they really want it, especially if you have some hard $$ invested, they'll tow it away. My buddy's built solid axle 4Runner got towed at 2am while park on his driveway.

Best recovery practice in my opinion is to buy yourself a GPS tracker that is able to pinpoint location. Buy a unit that will text/call when your vehicle began moving after being armed. Consider a unit that does not use the vehicle's battery as a power source or gets plug into the OBD port as those are too common indicator for thieves to look for or to unplug the battery and kill the tracker.

If they want it, they'll get it.

 

There was a thread a while back by a guy that was an electrician (IIRC), retired perhaps, that installed kill switches in many different locations for Taco owners. I'll try to search for it when I get some time, but it was a wealth of info. Wish my memory was better but I'm guessing about 5-6 years ago

 

There's one security system where multiple critical circuits are routed to a mil-spec connector mounted on the dash. To start the vehicle, you install a mating connector that completes the circuits. The connector pin out is unique for each installation. Effective against most theft methods except towing.

 

I had my work vehicle stolen right out of my driveway without a sound. I recently purchased a Taco and I got a Ghost 2 Immobilizer installed on it. It won't prevent the thief from getting in the car but it will deter them from driving off with it. You need to enter in a sequence of buttons (already existing in your vehicle. No new buttons added) to put the vehicle into gear. If not the car just shuts off. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it for a piece of mind. Go on Youtube and look up some videos. It's a pretty good product so far. I've also added a club to the steering wheel. I'm also looking to find a good brake lock to add as well. I want to make it as difficult as possible for them to steal my truck. Hope this helps.

If you live in Ontario in the GTA, I got mine at Raceway Chrysler, they're an authorized dealer and installer. It was $2500. The brake locks are hard to find. I'm looking for one that doesn't attach to the steering wheel. Club used to make a pretty good one but it got discontinued and can't find them anywhere. I'll keep you posted if I find one.

yeah it's not cheap. But it's worth it in my opinion. You may be able to find it cheaper.

Keep your keys in a Faraday box when not in use. The box won’t let out the RFID signals out.

i have made 2 killswitches one for the starter and one for the fuel pump.. does any one have any ideas for a CAT shield .. home made ?

I am mostly concerned about theft when I park my taco long term and away from home; airport parking, hotel, boat launch...

I'm thinking if i have a "The club" on the wheel (backwards), a tile in the flooring, the fob turned off and the battery switched off, it would be too much hassle for most instances. i can't stop someone from towing it.

*EDIT* I am now thinking about getting a fake OBD port and the battery switch.

Thieves can unlock a door in 10 seconds, will try the ODB, no power; pop hood, check battery, turn battery switch on, check ODB again, not working.. hopefully ran out of time

 

better off pulling the fuel pump fuse/relay. that way the truck comes alive, and will crank, but won't ever start, they'll assume further mechanical problems, and move on.
