Rear Diff

I have an 08 prerunner and was thinking about replacing the rear differential and putting an LSD or locker back there. I was wondering if anyone had any experiance with this type of project?

 

What are you driving conditions going to be? lots of offroad?

 

Not really, I live in Philly and I only have issues when we get snow.

 

Get a limited slip. Will be way cheaper than a locker + you dont want to be locked on the street when driving in snow, it will make your truck fishtail. A little slip is good.

If I had the money to get my locker right now I would sell you my factory Limited slip.

 

What do I need to look for in an LSD to ensure the correct fit? I had heard that if I check the VIN # it should tell me the type of diff I have but I can't match any numbers to the form I have.

 

Factory limited slip from 05-08 truck would fit your truck and they are the best thing for the snow.

 

Your PreRunner is a base prerunner right, not TRD? If yes, you have the 8.4" housing/R&P.

 

I like the factory LSd pretty well but I would like to go over to the gear style LSD to get away from clutches. I have never had any issues with the clutches at all and have had them in three different makes and models. I just like the idea of not having clutches to wear out, or having to deal with adding LSD friction modifier and such. I have not owned the gear style LSd yet but I have heard good things...

 

It is a TRD sport. Is it still an 8.4" housing?

 

If thats the case then my LSD sucks.

 

Have a used Detroit Truetrac LSD for sale if you are interested. Probably has around 4k on it then I pulled it and swapped back to a full locker. I had no complaints with mine and it was as smooth as stock but a lot stronger!

 

Why has no one tried an Eaton ECTED? Do they not make them for our trucks?

 

Which is probably easier to fix then invest money in new one.
How many miles you have on current one and when did you replace gear oil? With what ? and What additive?
Clutchpacks can be easily replaced if they wear out but considering that now I had seen two factory LSD's with mileage and offroad usage with pretty much no wear, most likely yours are caked with burned gear oil.

 

Mine was a complete turn around when I changed the Diff oil. It works too good on the snow.

 

I need to find an LSD for my truck since it is an SR5 4x4. I don't do any serious off roading, so I don't need it to lock, Just something better than on open diff for the rear.

 

Almost brand new, what oil did you used on it ?

What should I be looking for on the sticker, and where on the rear is it located? I just got the truck two weeks ago

 

x2 There should be white/red sticker on housing that says LSD oil only. You can also take vin number to Toyota and they will tell you if truck came with LSD.
If you looking at junkyards you need to ask for diff with POSI non-locked.

 

My differential cover has a sticker on it but sadly no LSD oil only sticker. Oh well I guess it is off to the aftermarket. What type of shops do you go to to get one installed? I always had my rear end work done by one person on my mustang. I know that someone can screw up a rear end pretty horribly if it is not set up right.
