So you push your 1st gen offroad - what cracks next?

Nope. Just stock OEMs. Not even on a wheeling trip when it blew. Had years of abuse prior to this though. Not really surprised it happened. What is surprising is I ended up blowing up a rear diff and a front before any CVs have let loose. I'm up to 2 CVs now.
With an ARB in the front now it's solid. RCVs are an option, but we will see.

Agreed. I think I was just over 550k when that happened. Definitely over due on some fresh gears. It did outlast the rear elocker, I broke that before the front.

 

I’m really interested to see what an arb in our front diff really takes to break.

Seen a few stock carrier issues but I haven’t seen someone with an arb break a r&p or carrier etc, if someone has please post.

I need to go through mine to chase down an air leak so I’m interested to see what it looks like after years of abuse with rcvs and a few broken jack shafts.

 

A CV will break before it. And if you get rcv ones then the stub shafts will break.

Not saying it's impossible, but once a locker is up there it is far from being the weak link at that point.

 

I had an air leak on mine that was blowing air back into the diff housing and pushing gear oil out the breather when I used my front locker.
Sent it back to ECGS. #13 had to be replaced because the seal housing (11) had ended up digging into it. Not sure why the seal housing O-rings in front of it failed, but maybe I got a poorly assembled one from the factory or something.

Glad I had the ECGS warranty on that one.

 

Dang I better pull mine apart sooner rather than later. I was hoping to get away with replacing the O rings (12) and maybe seal housing (11) and bonded seal (1)

Sounds like the same symptoms, blowing air and gear oil out of the breather. Sometimes it will still lock up but the compressor still cycles more than normal. Only two trips and maybe 150 miles on it since it started so hopefully it didn't tear too much up. Hopefully I can figure it out myself since it is outside of 5 years from ECGS and they already replaced a broken rear for me even though they shouldn't have.

 

If the gear oil is sparkly coming out, that would be my guess as to what it is.

I did drive 30 miles on my most recent broken jack shaft so there may be some remnants floating around despite my best effort to get them out.

 

I just added a 2 gal air tank and let the wonderful aroma of gear oil permeate the air... I won't buy another air locker.

 

We're limited on selectable front lockers for the 7.5 diff though. Afaik it's only the ARB or the harrop which is pretty spendy now.
Or you go auto locker which isn't for everyone.

I've been using the Eaton E locker for both the front and rear for about 2 years and lots of offroad abuse. They're readily available in the USA.

 

Eaton and harrop are the same.

 

ARB is garbage. I ran arb before as well. I will never run another arb.

TJM is way better than ARB imo.

 

My engine bay is already covered in gear oil from trying the locker a couple times off camber. Had everyone else stressing smelling gear oil.

Tried to get the diff out tonight and I got down to the rear 12mm Allen and can’t track one down.

When I get the diff out I’m thinking about motor mounts, mine look perfect to my surprise but how many have solid offroad mounts or trail gear bombproof ones, and do you recommend them?

 

One is etched Eaton and the other is etched Harrop. How are they the same?

 

Because they are made in collaboration. Harrop designed it and Eaton produces. No matter who's box art you buy, it's the same product.

 

I call it Eaton because that's what it's branded as over here. I would hate for someone to try and import a Harrop because someone misled them.

 

Solid offroad mounts are far better.
