So you push your 1st gen offroad - what cracks next?

Might have a shot at redemption come spring.

I did the "marMod". Drill out the stud and stick a bolt through it. This was primarily to keep the engine from rotating and stuffing my turbo into the ac lines. Noise and vibration was increased.

 

Lots of pics but this is 6 years 25k or less probably hard miles 5 years with rcvs and 35s between @theesotericone and I. It outlasted 1 add stub and 2 manual hub shafts last year.

Ring and pinion looks great to me. Looks like a tiny hole in the copper line if you look close in pics and chewed up o rings. I think it be good with a new seal housing and o rings.

No noticeable wear on the flange cap like in @betterbuckleup diff






And found a few extra chunks floating around from broken jack shafts. I’m sure it didn’t help having these right near the o rings. They seem to hide inside a little void between the passenger splines and bushing, the bushing is chewed up as well.
Most of this was probably because I was pissed after breaking and drove ~30 miles with a broken shaft back to my garage lol.

 

Puking gear oil out the front diff breather isn't new to you. It's done it to me as well. The weird thing is it always held air and the compressor only cycled about every 5 minutes or so. How's the coil bucket repair holding up?

 

It got to the point the past two times out that it cycles almost constantly and doesn’t really want to lock. I feel like it used to like 50/50 never cycle or cycle every 5minutes ish usually at hard angles.

Coil buckets haven’t broken again yet haha hopefully hydro bumps and conservative limit straps help me get some miles out of them.

I honestly think you woulda had it if that locker would have stayed engaged. You were damn close.

 

Did you wipe off the gunk from the copper line in that pic or was something rubbing on it?

 

No it was rubbing on the ring gear flange and bolts. You can see a little wear line around the flange where it was rubbing.

Looks like a tiny pin hole in the line in the center of the wear. I should probably try and test and see if it blows air but I’ll probably just replace it. Either way it is odd that it seems to have lasted so long then gotten messed up. Opposite side of pinion so I don’t think any deflection would cause it.

That's interesting. Maybe it was close to the flange to start and then sagged(?) over time or something.

We've seen that before Nuub.

 

Not generally applicable to everyone else (at least not in exactly the same way) but I had this one recently. Didn't catch it until the entire right side and top were completely gone, and only 1" was remaining on the driver side, though, to give myself a bit of slack, this is usually behind the tire and most of the cracked weld was still shiny.

I wrote that and thought, how sad will it be when everyone is too young to get super trooper quotes.

 

Oof, you almost lost that one.

I bent my spare tire mount pretty good last year so I went full beef on it the other day.

 

I regret not replacing my LCA and instead going with new bushings for this very reason.

 

This reminds me that I need to weld mine...

 

I aim to not have that regret…
