Just spoke with another dealer who provided yet more conflicting info..

I just hit 60k on my MT. Tech told me manual transmission flush doesn't need to be done until 90k. Spark plugs go at 100k. Front and rear differentials get done at 45k. I find it hard to believe that the 4x4 service is the only thing the truck needs besides the oil change. If nothing else, why is Toyota underselling all of these services to such an extent? The only explanation I can think of is that they don't want the third gens going to 300k+. If everyone's driving around a 30 year old truck, the auto makers aren't selling new cars.

I've seemingly done a lot of research on this exact topic (dealer's/manufacturers recommended intervals). I think you're right, if people have problems with their vehicles sooner then they will need a new vehicle based on maintenance intervals that potentially went too long. No way would I do 10k mile oil changes but that's apparently what TOYOTA recommends.

I believe as a trans age they need some of the old fluid to keep the grip. Dump and fill is all that's needed.

I am just getting to 20k mi and I am getting ready to do fluids on diffs, MT Gearbox, and transfer case. I now have all fluids in hand. - Even found some of Toyota's diff fluid with a good sale price - fortunately...

I hope there is a solid alternative to this 'unobtanium extract' by the time I have to do this again... it is not easy to find and the prices are typically crazy expensive.

I have 85K on my Tacoma and have appointment at dealership to use a fluid exchanger in few weeks. They will do it for $300. I checked with local transmission shop and they wanted $275 to do it. I’ve had all services done by dealer since I purchased truck. I trust they’ll do it right.

I go 10k sometimes more with synthetic, 230k zero issues and I use whatever brand is the cheapest.

Just for an update on this in case anyone is interested. I said fuck it and went with the flush instead of the drain and fill, so far so goor, again 2016 with 39k miles. Trans shifts buttery smooth so far

They used BG additive, 40$ add on. Cleaner goes in first, truck warms up, then they pump the 12 qts through with the final fluid getting the treatment additive.

Did mine twice adding 3 quarts the first time then 2 quarts the second time.

2020 model, did the whole neutral-drive warm up procedure twice.

    Damn shits not cheap.

Stock with a camper shell for now.
I think I’m going to have all the fluids changed in my truck that I’m about to purchase to have a fresh start for it. Some of them I will do on my own but after reading through this and the concern of trans temp, I think I am going to have the dealership do the trans fluid. With that being said when I go there should I tell them to drain the trans fluid and fill it up ? Or to have a fluid exchange of the trans? I know to not flush it.
