Definitely location dependent. I live very close to a major urban area in the midwest. There's been plenty of times where 4wd was a nice feature when the city plow trucks ignore 8" of snow on the side streets downtown.

 

Didn't make myself clear. He clearly thinks now that there is a hard cap. I am not anti-EV. Just sifting through the facts.

 

If you ever plan to tow anything or traverse wet grass, you may appreciate the 4wd. And also when it's time to trade or sell.

 

The new CEO has always been 100% clear and stated that ICE are going nowhere and will always be needed for emerging/developing markets that don't have the developed infrastructure to support BEV's. I don't know what point you are trying to make? The CEO was ousted in his own words for being a dinosaur who was slow to adopt to BEV's, the new CEO then announced 10 BEV models by 2026. Toyota's stock has also done great since he stepped down. These are all facts, not kabuki.

I like the idea Ram is going with, I just wish it wasn't a Ram. Makes it an interesting concept that I will be watching from the sidelines.

Honestly don’t plan to do either. Live near Houston in an urban city. The most we got is a few days of icy roads which doesn’t have any effect on me as I work from home. I probably drive less than 2k miles a year

Fuck the environment, I want my 600HP, 775 ft/lb of torque on demand with no torque curve, 65MPGe Toyota truck and i want it now!

 

Is that a legit $10K off MSRP or is that including tax credits?
Those are the small battery trucks so they aren’t great for long distances but for an around town truck they would be great.

 

I think they messed up using a gas engine for the "range extender". Since it can go 145 miles on the battery, most of the time you will just plug in and recharge. That means you will have a lot of gas in that 28gal tank that will get stale. Seems like diesel would have been a better option for the generator.

 

I'm not sure. I know they can now take the ~7500 tax credit off at point of sale and that started this year. So the point of sale price point is effectively the same as reducing MSRP for the consumer/buyer and then the dealership gets the tax credit come tax time next year.

 

If you don’t have snow and you are staying on the pavement then 4WD isn’t necessary.

 

My buddy, who also lives near Houston, said at least one local dealer is already discounting 2wd 2024 SR's below MSRP.

 

$2-$3k off MSRP with this broker, not just SR's either.

I wonder if the prior advantages of owning a Toyota (reliability/efficiency) will disappear forever with the antiquation of the ICE. Toyota is clearly behind the competition in BEVs and I read a quote somewhere that reluctance to abandon ICE is partly motivated out of concern for losing skilled labor jobs in Japan. My partner just bought a Tesla Model Y for 37K plus TTL. Cheaper than a Rav4 hybrid by alot. Could be an existential problem for Japanese auto manufacturers.

 

The real question is why discounts are happening so soon. My position is that manufacturers are flying to close to the sun with prices, Toyota included.

But then again, without seeing the actual window stickers on the lot, for all we know online price discounts are more than offset with "addons" and "accessories". We already know dealers like to play games with online prices vs actual price to get people in the door.

 

I think the simplicity of future Toyota BEV's will be just as relevant as their ICE predecessors. ICE vehicles will be around for the next 2-3 generations so basically they aren't going anywhere. The future success and adaptation of BEV's by any auto manufacturer and is the reason why Toyota is waiting is the battery and charging tech to match or better current ICE refueling time and range. Toyota still has not deviated from this thought as have a few other Japanese automakers. And i think they're right. Current BEV battery tech is in it's infancy IMHO.
