that was the same case with extreme home makeover. the first few, you could tell they planned for basic paint/trim/flooring, while intending to save as much of the original house as possible. every house had major mold/rot issues because of the families had issues with maintaining the property due to their situations. i think it was the second season when they finally started demoing the entire house and starting fresh-- it was the only way to ensure their tv deadlines.

I just copied that pic from the internet. I have trapped them and skunks using dry cat food in a "cup" at the front of the trap. There's a lot of videos/info out there. They're crafty little bastids, good luck.

Reason why you don’t cheap out on power cords and why you try not to use them. This was just plugged in and nothing plugged into it.

Looks like shingles and roofing material would make good bait.

    Looking for some plumbing advice...
My wife and I bought our first house here about 2 years ago now, and I've been slowly making repairs and improvements on it in that time.
I've known the drains in this house are an awful mess, but I'd been putting it off because, well, gross. That changed when the toilet started to smell about a week ago. No problem, I've replaced wax rings before. So I pull the toilet off to see that the metal flange has completely rusted away, thus the wax ring failed, smells galore. Ok, still no problem just have to replace the flange now. Fixed that, but smell didn't go away. Went back to hardware store to double up the wax rings. Ok that fixed it. Fast forward to last night, smell has come back. Maybe I did it all wrong, I am a total novice when it comes to plumbing. But I think it's odd that it worked for a week.

A little more background on the cluster that is our house. So it being 100+ years old, it's had many owners through the years, and been remodeled and repaired a few times. At least one of these owners in recent years was a total hack. None of the fixtures in the house had vents. There is a main stack, but that's it. I added a vent to the kitchen sink when I replaced that but the bathroom sink, shower, toilet and washing machine do not have vents. Maybe this is part of my problem? Second, the drains are just messed up in general. I knew this was a problem when we bought the place, but we had been renting it for a year and it had been working all that time so, good? I'm not a plumber, but I do understand how gravity works and I'm pretty certain water won't flow uphill, and has a tough time draining when the runs are completely flat.

Attached are some photos of the toilet drain from my basement, and the confusion of pipe where they all meet.

Edit- the subfloor looked ok when I pulled the toilet off. No rot and it was dry to the touch, so I don't think that's an issue. And before anyone asks, yes I did use glue. It's a single stage that does not have dye. I know it's typically a no-no but it's what I have on hand.

did you check to make sure you don’t have any other abandoned p or s traps that may have dried up and causing the smell?

Oh I know. I really just attached that to show you the wonderful things this house has to offer me. It doesn't leak at least? But yes I know that whole mess needs to be addressed eventually.

And I have not. All the other drains are working properly, would they if the p-traps are dry?

Did you really just stack the rings? They make Jumbo wax rings.

When you installed the new flange, did you install it flush with the finished floor, or does it sit recessed?

I think you need to focus on the flange wax situation before looking elsewhere at the plumbing.

I changed some toilets out recently, and switched to the foam / reusable rings with good success so far.
