    Hello OP (and others)

forgive me for repasting a cut from your photo posting.

I have my cap on order and i was wondering if anyone here that has one could measure the gap distance between the smartcap and the cab at the bedrail height and along the top as shown?

I would like to be able to have both the cab rear window on my 2015 open and the smartcap window open and have a weather seal between the two so heat or cold air being vented via a hose from a dashboard vent can be placed thru to warm or cool the cab when i remote start and do it without want the outside air also penetrating thru each open window

trying to find a way to somewhat seal the passthru between the two windows

i have head that the window on the smartcap is a bit recessed back from the outer panel it sits in and that the outer panel is closer to the truck cab than the two windows are from each other.

im trying to determine if a 1.125 inch seal (greater or less) can be placed on the forward face of the smartcap before it is put onto the bed to help for somewhat of a seal (doesn't have to be water proof) but enough to minimize outside air penetrating excessively into the gap area between both windows when open

or maybe a seal on the smartcap and another on the back of the cab and have them lined up to touch each other if the gap is greater

any measurements or knowledge of any way that someone might have done this short of or in lieu of inserting a small innertube and lightly inflating it while parked will be helpful

id like to avoid having to install and inflate something and then remove it each time i have to drive

for the above, this is the type of seal im hoping to fit, but need to find the gap distance to see if this would work or if larger or smaller seal might.... this one is 1.125 and as said i dont need much compression, not looking for a total seal , but enough to block most outside air. you may reveal that the gap is just too large for a seal like this and i may have to find a 10 or 12 inch diameter more durable innertube instead of those cheap inflatables but trying to get away from inflatibles that cant stay installed when driving or wiggle loose and pop and blow off at 60+ mph when the vehicle flexes Greenshot 2023-03-08 17.55.01.jpg

Hi Thank you, however i had mentioned that i was looking for something in lieu of those innertube types.

ive already owned two of those and the last one worked for only 3 nights, had to repair it, then two more and was done. thats why im looking for an alternative

    but again... thank you

to seal the gap between the truck rear window and the smartcap forward to cab window...........I found the perfect thing....ridiculously simple.....

a 3 inch diameter pool noodle.... a solid core one..... i cut one piece to be just wider than the truck rear window center sider and it fit perfect when pushed up from the inside by doing so with the windows both open and wedging it upward between the truck and the smartcap until it stops against the cap window frame and the the truck body just below the third brakelight on the cab...its a press fit so it just stays right there in place, no glue no tape just compression between the truck and the cap holding it in place......... then i took and cut two pieces for the vertical sides and took a sharp knife and sliced an angle taper into each one leaving them full at the top and about half width at the bottom and then wedged them in between the two open window from the inside i made sure the top piece over hangs the side pieces for water repelling fit no vertical gaps. .... After doing this, i drove thru a carwash with the truck rear window open and the smartcaps forward to cab window open and no water penetrated. the three pieces stayed in place without having to be glued or anything even at 90 mph ... and hey, if they do wear out.... then ill just cut new ones and push them in

bottom line is i just returned from a 23 day road trip from socal outbound to mt rushmore and then back thru yellowstone and grand tetons and other places in between and it stayed in place the whole time even during rain and high speed hwy driving as well as off-roading on trails and backcountry routes never got any rain or water or dust come in thru the open windows.. yes, i left the two windows full open the entire 6900 miles and 23 days and they stayed in place.....also i was able to remote start the truck while in my sleeping bag on my mattress and had the heater controls preset for high and hot and a little portable fan hanging at the open windows drawing the cabin heat into the cab so in the mornings i had a nice warm cab in about 15 minutes after remote starting and before crawling out of my bag and starting my day (of course i also insulated and carpeted the inside of my smartcap)

yeah tried those. Went thru several of them . They suck. They deflat, pop. Don’t stay in place .. cant handle being in place when driving high speed or off roading Wasted lots of money on them until switching to the pool noodle. I gave the pool noodle a good trial period before posting about it. Refer back to my March 2023 post #50 which was when I said I was looking for an alternative to them and have used the pool noodle since then and still have the same original cut pieces in place and working as good as they did when I initially diy put them in place back in April of 2023. Also. Let make a correction. It’s not a 3 inch diameter noodle. It’s a solid core 2.25 inch noodle cut into three smaller pieces each about a foot long roughly. The bottom doesn’t need one The sides have to be tapered with a knife. It’s quick and easy and each piece stays in place by simple compression fit between both windows …. Kind of self explanatory I dont think pictures are needed but can provide if necessary. Also it does not restrict my rear view mirror looking thru the camper shell and out the back window even with the smartcap security screen installed Albeit the shell itself limits visibility. This mod doesn’t restrict it any further and I have magnetic curtain rods with blackout curtains that I just put in place when inside or magnetic attach each one to the inside side walls when driving

and fyi. I placed two curtain panels onto each rod so I can divide them in the middle to allow fan to draw air in from cab or to peek out the back when inside. That’s the benefit of the smartcap being steel. You can have removable magnetic items that you put into place when inside or store to the side when driving

Anybody with the sport on a 2nd gen? After 7yrs with my Softtopper, I'm ready for a hard topper and windoors are a must.

I was quoted $4300 for an RSI sport shipped to my door

And a color matched Leer 100R with dual windoors and fold down front window is $3200 installed.

I keep bouncing around advantages and disadvantaged of both but you don't see many 2nd gens with a smart cap for reference. This has been a good thread for the adventure cap, but I'm leaning more towards the sport with side windows.

I sleep in mine every time i go camping. i even did a 3+week vacation trip and slept every night for 23 nights in it and im 6-5 and sleep very comfortable in my tacoma 5 foot bed when i am diagonal and my sleeping bag on top of my 6 inch memory foam mattress as shown in the picture in post #57 last picture. i can sleep straight on my back, legs straight and my head on the pilows up in the corner... or on my side and either way is comfortable. for ventilation, youll note that in that picture is a orange fan which when im inside, i hang it and keep the rechargeable battery fan running to circulate the air to reduce condensation from my breathe exhaust. i keep the window open between the truck cab and the smartcap slider so i can more fresh air from the front cab compartment and can even crack a window open for my rear passenger doors if need be which ive never had to do. i keep that pool noodle between both windows and it keeps bug and rain out and is still going strong 2 years later. i have remote start added to my tacoma 2015, so i preset my heater and blower fan to full hot and high and when i wake up and still in the bag, i can remote start and warm the cab and the fan draws the cab air into the smartcap shell if you hang it where it can pull thru the window. my shell is insulated and then an additional layer of stretch carpet attached everywhere using permatex spray adhesive and even in hot summer of southern california desert, my insulation has not come loose one bit an dis still holding as strong and keeps it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. added note is that i sleep with a cpap and i runa full size second battery that i mounted inside the fender behind the right rear wheel ( i dont run any solar at all) just get a sealed lead acid battery and a make yourself a good solid mount for which you can put that battery and run 20 feet of 2/0 battery cable and place a 200 amp circuit breaker (reset-able) and a battery isolatopr and the battery will top itself back up when driving the next day easily. like i was saying i run a full size battery and i use a cpap and when i climb inside at night, i run my lights for about two hours while reading a book and drawing from only that battery i have my cell phones charging on the ports on the bed wall being feed by that battery, i have a rechargeable maglite with charging base mounted on that wall that is feed by that battery, and i have a 12 v cigarette lighter that i plug my cpap into and i use the humidifier and the heated hose which is much higher amp draw yet after all that , the next morning my battery voltage has never dropped below 12.1 and my battery capacity on that battery has never gone below 66% typically its about 74% after 8 hours of sleep after lights out. my main battery is isolate, i also carry a 59 cu inch refrigerator in th eback seat area ( i remove my back seats 8 bolts and they quickly come out the seats and the back rests when i go on a prolonged trip where i want to bring my fridge and my 11 gallon footwell water tank and a storage bin for clothing and a storage bin on the other side of the fridge for canned goods and cookware) but that frisge is also powered by that 2nd battery and it runs all night too. in the AM i remote start and begin recharhing the main from the engine while i warm up before climbing out of the bag and opening the door to exit and go pop up my shower and use my engine heated shower system that draws from my water tank via a pump under the truck and routes it thru a thermostat that sends some up thru the engine compartment theu a heat exchanger i custom mounted that warm the isolated plates by using the engine coolant which is over 180 transferring heat to the potable water flowing thru the other side, after a 15 minute warm up after the truck two batteries have started to charge and my camper shell now warm, i climb out and use my my shower which puts out up to 122 degree water even continuously if i were to empty the whole tank in one go and if i keep the engine running. I just run it just long enough to finish my shower whch is about 2.5 gallon of intermittently used pulls of the garden hose trigger per shower and that includes shaving while showing.. then i dress, fold up the pop up shower, quick disconnect my 15foot coiled 1/2 inch garden hose and stow it in a small bucjet and hang my towel, eat and then drive off for the days adventure planned. if you dont insulate, there will be condensation and water dripping everywhere from your breathe exhaust while sleeping especially if using a cpap with humidifier. but for me because i insulated. only a few bare spots that arent insulated ever get any hint of moisture from condensation. ive never had any leaks on my cap anywhere and have repeatedly slept in pouring rain and in snowfall. i modified my latches to open from inside. all i can say is my rig is effcient, quick and easy and super comfortable and i dont have to set up any tent and can arrive after dark and just climb in and sleep. and my water tank shower system is awesome even on the coldest of mornings. best thing is i don use any roof mount tents or have anything on my roofs to ruin fuel economy. just the truck and the camper, no external things causing drag....and all my weight is stored in that back seats, my fridge and camp gear and clothes al centered between both front and rear wheels not aft of the rear wheels and my water tank too and its on floor so its a low center of gravity and doesnt have effect on driving. passenger front seat and driver seat remain open and for two people, my girl and i She is 5-8 so its gets a bit narrow for us since we are both sleeping diagonal in a 5 foot bed but when im solo, its way more than enough room and comfy to sleep in bed with the smartcap keeping you feeling very climate controlled and very safe feeling regardless of weather or wild animal ... if you look close... you will see the biometric operated gun safe mounted up against the inside ceiling of my smartcap. so yeah safe....

oh yeah, since i remote start when i wake up or if i want to remote start and warm the shell before bed after closing myself inside it, i put a first alert CO2 monitor on the wall next to my 12v outlets just to be that extra careful from exhaust fumes, which so far have never gone off. plus i dont sleep with the engine running. and even i engage the remote starter, it times out and shuts the engine back off after 15 minutes unless i use my keyfob to resest the timer again for an additional 15 minutes at a time from the time i last pressed it. so no way am i accidentally gonna fall asleep with engine left running and even if it could happen, i have the monitor to alert me ...and i installed one of those tailgate gap stop weather strips to make sure no fumes can come up thru the tailgate hinge axis

let me tell you, when the wind is blowing or if its raining or even if you arrive at your next campsite late into the night, its so nice not to have to mess with setting up a tent or a RTT or any of that crap. you can just climb in, pull the tailgate and tooper door shut, draw the curtains and go to sleep I store nothing else back there except occasionally i bring an 8x8 awning for the campsite and if so thats just tossed on top of the mattress and sleeping back and easily pulled out and set aside if i want to just pull into camp and goto sleep and not have any setup and who needs solar, unless i guess you sit at camp all day and are using the truck all day for adventure and back road which is recharging both batteries and more than good enough power for the dark of night, engine off, when you come back to or arrive at your next campsite solar smolar, save your money and just get another battery even after 23 days straigh for my longest trip, like how much fuel was i really using just to idle the truck in the am to begin warming me, my shower and get the 2nd battery starting to recharge. maybe 1/2 gallon a day maximum? and im driving and using my truck for adventure each day and not sitting at camp so i have the whole day to top batteries and then some without need for solar panels that kill my fuel economy and cost them to use more gas than im using and they dont work unless its daytime and sunny anyway. and no big trees. yeah yellowstone ... good luck with solar
