6MT throwout bearing and clutch system shenanigans

So it starts lads...

Finally had some free time, got the cats and shafts out, figured I'd take the whole thing out since I'm replacing my carrier bearing as well. Much more to do but I remember the last time the most tedious part was the cat hardware which decided to crap itself. This time no busted hardware, only a stud decided to come out.

So hopefully the rest goes smoothly... Just gonna do small bits as I can.

 

I can't tell what that wire is but I assume your issue has something to do with the clutch switch. Does your truck start while holding in the clutch or do you have to use the button? I think the cruise control uses whatever that switch is to know when you've pushed in the clutch to disengage cruise... Unless it has its own switch.

Next time I'm with my truck I'll have a look and see if I notice that wire you circled.

 

if I depress clutch all the way yes it will start and the clutch cancel button works as well. But for the life of me I don’t see anywhere this would plug in.

 

If it's just a single green wire with yellow stripe, I'm certain it's the e-brake indicator switch wire. Toyota wired in two of these plugs and, depending on transmission,one is on the left side for the foot controlled e-brake for auto trannys and the other is under the right side of the dash for the hand operated e-brake of the manual trannys. Since there's two plugs for each configuration, no matter which transmission you have, one of them is unplugged. Since you're 6 speed manual, yours is likely unplugged on the left.

As for cruise control, does the indicator light come on at the dash when you push the cruise control button?

 

I wonder if the transmission ties into the cruise control system somehow even though it's a manual and not auto? Never really given it much thought but I guess it would only make sense...

That being said, there is one connector iirc that plugs into a sensor on the transmission I think it was on the passenger side kind of forward towards the top, next to the exhaust manifold flange. The rest of the connectors I think went to the transfer case. Might be worth looking to make sure all your wiring is plugged in on your transmission.

EDIT: I just remembered there is also a connector that plugs in also on the passenger side near the prop shaft flange near the rear of the transmission.

 

yes it is green with yellow stripe so you’re correct. Yes the light does come on the dash. As of today it’s got the trac off light with the check engine light one. Only code is for oxygen sensor out of range. Frustrated with this one.

 

thanks for the tips. I triple checked all the external connections and they’re all clicked in and tight.

 

I don't know how it is with Toyotas but I know on my Subaru it was the case that whenever it had any check engine light on, the cruise control light would turn on and off freely but you couldn't get cruise control to engage.

I have also read that the "Trac off" light sometimes comes on with any other check engine light even if it's not related.

Another silly thought but would it be possible you have the connectors for the O2 sensors swapped around? I was looking at my harness after getting my transmission out and even though they're different lengths it would be possible to mix them up. I'll have to double check but on mine I think the right side harness has red tape by it and the left side has blue.

 

Minor edit to post#2 clarifying master cyl hardware specifics.

 

Make sure that your pedal returns far enough up that it is depressing the cruise cancel switch that is way up at the top of the pedal bracket. There's a bit of adjustability there. Though, it's not much fun to access. If this switch isn't pressed, the cruise control will turn on like normal, but will not set because the computer thinks the clutch is being pressed.

 

thank you for the tip. It does appear to be adjusted properly and is completely depressed when pedal is released. I will adjust it out slightly and recheck. At this point it’s going to have to go back to the mechanic. I’m getting a repetetive code p0137 with check engine light and the trac light. I replaced the seuspect sensor with a factory one from from dealer, cleared codes and lights have returned. I think perhaps something is unplugged or going on with the harness above the transmission possibly.
This white plug is part of a diagnostic system or brake controller plug I believe? As in, it’s supposed to be unplugged?

 

I suppose that it is possible that the harness was damaged when the tranny was removed or re-installed. An O2 code doesn't sound like anything to do with the clutch pedal related stuff. The rear O2 sensors are in fact plugged into the transmission harness. So, I'd start looking there.

Pic is of the brake controller connector. If you're not using it, just zip-tie it up out of the way. It isn't connected to anything until you add a brake controller.

 

I be checked everything that’s visible but I can’t see what exactly is going on with harness on top of the trans. I can tell the harness it isn’t in its original brackets in a couple places. I’ve got a call in to the shop that did it. I’d rather not take it all the way out there but I’m chasing my tail at this point.
On a side note the system you developed works/feels great. Additionally I found an “elevator bolt” at the local hardware store that made the perfect clutch pedal stop.

 

Its pretty easy (if you're not paying close attention) to mash the harness in between the block/ bellhousing and also the top of the transmission tunnel when installing the transmission. Its also potentially hazardous when removing the transmission as there are plenty of places for the harness to snag when lowering the transmission. To make matters worse you can pretty easily swap the left (blue tape) and right (red tape) o2 connectors with each other. I didn't read well enough to realize that it was a shop that did the work, I'd definitely just take it to them and have them sort it.

 

The red taped one is on the passenger side but it almost looks a little contorted. Thank you for all the assistance.

As more people are interested in this setup I'm learning that I need to be more clear up front. The whole thread originally was a "Train of thought" sort of thing. I'm working on it...
