2020 Tacoma 2wd w 100k miles. I started getting a low growling humming sound. It’s not the engine because the sound continues if I shift to neutral and coast or turn off motor while moving in neutral. I’m thinking it might be front wheel bearings?? Because the sound almost vanishes in a turn. The hum gets louder and higher toned with speed, at any speed. Kinda sounds like a small airplane motor flying by. Possibly rear Differential? Open to suggestions on isolating this.

Probably one of the wheel bearings. Could be front or rear.

Looks like a faulty bearing, I had that problem couple months ago. Ended up waiting 1.5 months for bearing to arrive.

Did you check the tires? Sometimes the tires can cup and create a wheel bearing-like noise.

Under normal circumstances it's a little early, but X3 for the wheel bearing, in all likelihood, on the front.
If it's worn enough, you can jack up the front end, grab the tire and feel the up / down play.
Once confirmed, it's an easy fix. Grab a a pair of hub assemblies, 200lb tq wrench and knock them both out at once.

Was dealing with this issue on my 2017. My wife usually drives the taco as its her daily! I drove it to get an oil change and realized the thing was humming like crazy. It had just over 100.000 km's (60.000 miles) on it with 4 year old KO2's. I assumed the tires were causing the noise so I put on some new Wildpeak AT3W's. Well that didn't fix the issue! Turned out it was the passenger side rear wheel bearing! Took over a month to get the factory wheel bearing! Crazy! Anyways, installed and the noise was gone!

Did you replace them yourself? I did my 2011 myself and it wasn’t that challenging. The dealer here has the parts in stock @ $340 each! Dannnngggg I might just go after market if that’s what OEM costs.

Rears aren’t hard but not very DIY friendly since you need the specific Toyota wheel bearing puller and a press. Well, I guess you could cut the old bearing off with a whole bunch of cutting in lieu of the puller. But that would suck.

But if you did a 2011 then you already know. And yeah, sadly the OEMs are high priced but they are the best option for reliability/longevity.

UPDATE- I jacked up the front end. Drivers side has 1/4” of sloppy play when I pull the tire a my hands. That one’s shot. The passenger front isn’t sloppy but it has a sort of grinding sound and doesn’t spin very freely. Guess I’ll do them both. Thanks all!

I'm facing the same issue on my 2011 4x4 double cab. I haven't had a chance to jack it up yet to confirm that's what's going on, but from all that I've read it seems extremely likely. That said? does anyone have an opinion on this part from Napa? It's spendy (especially for two) but I want something that will last...

Get this one since it uses a Koyo bearing. If you need two, there's a listing on his profile for the pair and it knocks off a few bucks. I used to run these on my truck, which saw tons of abuse.

Sloppy left to right or up and down? Left to right can be attributed to the tie rod. If you grab the tire at 12 and 6 o clock and there is play, then it's wheel bearing.

Other symptoms of a bad front bearing are squishy brakes, or if the grinding/humming goes away while turning. For example, your driver-side bearing is making noise. On a sweeping right turn, there is more side load on the driver bearing, and takes away the play and gets rid of the noise. Just a few examples for future readers of this thread.

I don't see brand of bearing used on those, so I'd keep looking for something with Koyo or another well known brand. NSK?

    EDIT: I used these guys:

Not spendy compared to the dealer who wanted $790 per wheel for parts plus $400 install per side, plus tax. $2800? I got a set on parts geek for $275 total, installed in 30mins per side. I can replace them ten times for the cost from the dealer.

Hehehe. I might swing by NAPA anyway and take a look; I'm paranoid about my wheel falling off and I was hoping to fix it this weekend
