Parked truck to get some stuff at a retail store, when I started the truck it made this noise and A/C started dying.

Is it possible to perhaps pinpoint what broke by this particular noise, sounds like coming from behind the glove compartment area, maybe just a bit to left of it.

Truck runs fine otherwise. This happened about 2-3 days after picking it up from oil change where I left truck all day when I was at work, things like that bugs me out.

    it’s a 2017 S5 btw.

Edit: looks like I can’t just drop vid here, I’ll try uploading to YouTube and posting link,
It’s like a gurgling sound, if that helps for now.

Going by video sounds will be a guessing game. I’d just take it in to a good tech,, swap-a-part becomes more expensive in the long run. Also some A/C components need to replaced when others are, if the system is contaminated.

I’m just hoping it’s one of those things that it’d be a very distinguished sound.

I had my actuator go on an older car, the noise is unmistakable.

Knowing what the issue is will help me when I bring to qualified tech for the service

Sounds like something is hitting the fan?
Does it do this only on AC?

I actually didn’t try any other way I don’t think, ac is always left on, so when I started the car it was making this noise right way, it stops when I turn the dial. This was yesterday, I haven’t had time to do anything yet, but I can try anything right now…

It's a leaf caught up in the blower. Happened to me once. Your oil change place may have checked the cabin filter, prompting the leaf to fall into place.

I think I read something about the early 3rd gens having an issue with the squirrel cage plastic on the blower motor, having a separating issue. Not sure though

So, just found this video https://youtu.be/KKaxJoQ_U2Q?si=MLqHsj27saRsrYOq
Same noise, guy didn’t mention ac not blowing cold air, mine blows no air, but same noise and this is easy enough to check, I’ll have a look tomorrow during daylight

Fan motor is same as blower on video above?
Did you have to do anything else or just replace blower?

Yes, in fact it is listed as a "Motor Sub-Assembly, Blower With Fan".

You should check the Fan Resistor coil too. It was explained to me, on most vehicles, the moving air from the blower motor cools the coil. Should it no longer work, the coil can overheat. My buddy is a Honda tech, and when I was at his shop doing maintenance, we replaced both on a CRV. He said on customer vehicles (one's he didn't personally drive) he replaces both. If he drove the vehicle, he would immediately stop using fan, and replace only the blower motor assembly.

To update the thread, I’ve just finished replacing the blower assembly.

I followed the steps from the YouTube video above, as soon as I removed the filter I could see the cracks on the fan, went to the store, bought a new assembly, aftermarket one, seems better I guess, has a bolted in fan.
Pretty easy swap and ac back working again.

Thanks everyone for the help, I’m relieved this was an easy fix and not a costly shop reapair.
