I think that is the root of the expectations issue. You are comparing vastly different vehicles and expecting them to drive the same.

A Diesel is all low RPM torque whereas a v6 is all high RPM power. The Diesel has the low RPM torque for the accelerator to work without shifting. The v6 needs those RPM's to even come remotely close to the same amount of power.

As others have said, your choices are 1) get used to it 2) regear and/or supercharge (which still might not match your expectations) or 3) replace with another diesel.

clean 2G's are 20-30k+ in california depending on mileage. the good news is you won't have to pay california tax, and your TRD will fetch top trade-in value here. california sucks to live in but you can get all the benefits of the market here if you live somewhere else.

 

Your assumption is wrong there. I have a stick and I also need to downshift to get up hills on the highway. I'm shifting between 4th and 6th a lot in the mountains.

The motor is tuned for running above like 3500rpm and it just doesn't make low end torque. IIRC it makes peak power at redline. You can even feel when the motor comes on cam at around 4000rpm since it almost feels like VTEC kicking in. lol

 

Ok, this is a really good point. And I'll admit that I haven't really payed too much attention to these power curves to this point. But isn't 'holding a gear' more related to the torque curve? I'm not trying to accelerate on the highway, I'm trying to maintain the same speed. Am I completely misunderstanding that?

 

Ok, another manual confirming that my expectations/assumptions are all wrong here. I think I'll take this as the nail in the coffin of my hopes and dreams about this truck meeting my expectations without a regear...I really do appreciate everyone chiming in on this.

So, on to the Throttle Response issue. Any thoughts on that. Anyone else have 1/4" of dead pedal?

I've been on numerous numerous versions of OTT.

It helps with the downshifting, but it does not cure it.

I don't have any aspect of what I'd call a dead pedal.

5.29's will not fix the gear hunting unfortunately, it just makes it a little more lively per gear. If you hammer down it will go through the gear faster.

Any acceleration on the highway usually does cause these trucks to downshift. Any acceleration on mountain highways will cause it drop numerous gears and sit near redline occassionally.

Using cruise control makes it worse.

I drive my truck at 65-70mph in the slow lane. Truck is happy, I'm happy.

Good luck getting your issues worked out. I’m on skinny 33s with a fiberglass cap and stock tune. I’ve read many posts of people complaining about the shifting and gear hunting, but honestly never experienced any of it. My 2nd gen was a manual so I can’t compare it to the 4.0.

 

Torque is the amount of force an engine can put out; horsepower is a measure of work the engine can perform. Driving down the highway is work (displacing the vehicle), so horsepower is needed.

That dyno chart effectively starts at 2300 RPM. What RPM is your truck at in 6th going 70 on the highway? When your truck downshifts to unlocked 5th or 4th gear what RPM is the truck now at?

 

What does it do in ECT or have you tried that yet? There is no real pedal dead space if it is working and it holds the RPMs up.

 

Not high enough rpm to get into the torque needed to push our aerodynamic brick down the road.

Do the calculations for torque at the rpm the engine is turning at 75 mph.

Factor in parasitic loss for all aspects of the drivetrain.

Now calculate the resultant wind resistance of the front of our brick on wheels.

What you are left with is a very small amount of torque left to maintain.

Engine needs torque which equates to downshift and raising the rpms.

Transmission is saying no don’t downshift we need to maintain fuel economy.

Torque converter doesn’t have enough pressure to maintain.

You feel the results.

Tune doesn’t mean squat when in 6th with a light throttle to maintain. Torque at given rpm is the same.

 

I'd be willing to drive mine to you. It already has a supercharger as well, so you'd have zero complaints ever again.

And to any concerns about the frame/rust... The truck lived in a garage in the Seattle area until I got it the end of 2020 and it's been garage parked and not driven in the winter here in the magnesium chloride/salt covered roads.

 

Oh, I'm definitely a slow-laner when I drive this thing. It seems to be happiest at about 65 mph tucked right behind an 18 wheeler.

 

Ok, I think I'm getting it. 6th @ 70 mph is about 1700 rpm, so...way less than 80 bhp... That said, I'm not even trying to hold six at this point. I'd say 5th is closer to 2100 at 70 mph, so...still less than 80 bhp... Yeah, I'm starting to get it.

Your issue is that you got used to a monster of a drivetrain and now you’re driving a golf cart.

 

Well, that's a very generous offer, but I'm going to have to pass. I really need the 6' bed, and I've certainly learned my lesson about not testing a vehicle thoroughly before buying it...
